UPDATE: Fire Burns Garage on St. Michael-Albertville Border
Firefighters from both community departments were able to limit any damage after fire broke out in a garage near the community's main intersection.
UPDATE (Friday, June 1, 3 p.m.) St. Michael Fire Chief Steve Hosch said crews were able to knock down the fire in the 4400 block of LaBeaux in short order.
"It looked like it could be a lot worse. We thought when we broke the window it could break loose, but it just stayed in the wall."
Hosch said he concluded it was, indeed, an electrical fire as first reported. He said a fridge was plugged in near the source, which was a line going to an outlet.
"It's an old structure," Hosch said. "It also could have been some overload there. You just don't know until you take it all apart. Luckily, it smoldered in that line. It didn't really want to go anywhere else. There were some items in the garage that certainly could have fueled it."

Firefighters from the St. Michael and Albertville fire departments responded to a small structural fire early this morning at around 8:40 a.m.
Wright County deputies and Allina Ambluance were on standby as first-responders arrived to black smoke emerging from a detached garage on the property of a single family home near the intersection of 50th Street/Jason Avenue and County Road 19.
The home, which dates back to the two communities' origins, lies on property in front of Swamp Lake, at the main border of St. Michael and Albertville. St. Michael-Albertville Middle School West is across the county road, directly to the east.
Witnesses said firefighters were on scene quickly, and were able to limit the damage to just the garage structure.
A car that was parked in the garage had been driven by a resident as she headed into work. There was a riding lawnmower inside, but it appeared to avoid any fire damage.
Firefighters' efforts were concentrated on a southeast corner, where an appliance had apparently been plugged in. One witness said the fire appeared to be an electrical fire.
Occupants of the home, which is about 15 paces from the actual spot of the fire, were allowed to stay inside, including some children, as the fire was knocked down.
Albertville Public Works was also on scene to provide backup for AFD.

I was the first person to stop and I was also the first person to call 911 in regards to this fire. I was on my way to work this morning and several people in front of me on CR 19 were just driving by gawking. I wasnt going to just sit back and do the same, I feel like the unsung hero of this situation. Not even an honorable mention.

Nice update to your user name "pregnant hero"
I think maybe you should do some serious thinking before that baby is born so that you can teach him/her some manners...maybe also before your 25th bday next week this thinking could be a real eye opener for you.

Ooh~ You know my name; but you dont know jack about me.
As of right now- I resent calling the police, and had it been any of YOUR houses, I would have pulled over to watch it burn.
You people are disgusting- cynical and judgemental and I know NONE of you are perfect either. My life was just fine without you and will continue to be so. If you see me in public- you're better off swallowing your words because sticks and stones can break my bones...

Real heroes don't praise themselves... There are people that do good deads daily without ever being mentioned.
Did you honor the military heroes in some way yesterday? They are the true heroes.

I don't think you know the meaning of being humble. Yes, you made a difference no argument there, what I guess I'm trying to say is you sound stuck up and arrogant when you say you were not recognized as a hero. Please look up the definition of humble. Thanks

You didn't just pat yourself on the back. You commented on a public news site saying " I feel like the unsung hero in this situation. Not even an honorable mention". That is NOT lowliness or humble. You were asking to be honored for what you did.

Why would Wright county need a witness statement? It was nothing criminal, you saw a garage smoking and called 911. I don't think you witnessed anything significant other then the garage. Once again you are saying you would like to be mentioned. I am by no means robbing you of anything, YOU DID A GOOD DEED. But why must you boast about it? What about the folks who responded to the fire? Did you thank them? I'm not trying to insult you by any means, you did stand up, you did what nobody else did. Why the need to be mentioned?

I do not think that anybody said you didn't do a good job. The point were trying to make is that you call yourself the "hero", and wanted to be mentioned on a public news article. Sounds like you didn't get enough praise in life. Clearly you were not born and raised here. We don't publicly "pat ourselves on the back". I do believe in an earlier post of mine I did say you did a good deed.

And, every time a firefighter leaves the fire hall in a truck they are in danger. Flashing red lights and sirens make people do stupid things that cause accidents. You also have no idea what state that garage was in. There is an event called a backdraft, from what I have heard, this garage was ready to "backdraft". When that happens basically the building explodes. If you ask me, that is a pretty dangerous situation. So don't say that this wasn't a dangerous situation.

Yes, I actually have seen the garage. And yes the garage was at or near the draft state. I know exactly what I'm talking about. Yes, the fridge was on fire and so was the wall behind it. The reason there was no flames was because there was no oxygen left to burn in the garage. Which means when you introduce a large amount of oxygen, it has the potential to explode. St. Michael chief said "we thought that when we broke the window it could break loose, but stayed in the wall". I would say thats fairly close to what I said.

People just don't get it...why do you even need to explain to this detail the danger to the fire fighters who are fighting a fire and how that might make them the HEROs rather than pregnant hero - who, remind you, is 7 months pregnant, and that must take alot of guts to pick up the phone and dial 911 to report a fire. I'm glad she did, but really no danger there

Really!!! Calling 911 is a civic responsibility.. Hardly any heroic action is required.. Running into a burning building (not the case here I know) is heroic.. Taking credit when credit isn't really due is somewhat self centered and childish. Having to call 911 can be very nerve racking as I have done so many times, so I appreciate the fellings/emotions you expereinced then and are going through now. Brag all you want, you deserve all of the ata-boys ( or girls) you can take. Problem is we weren't there to give them to you when it mattered. So, it's best for you to just take a deep breath and know that you did a good deed and hopefully that child you are carrying will learn from you someday how important it is to be a responsible, productive, and civil minded member of our communities.. Thank you pregnant Hero for stopping and making the call.

Obviously hectik and pregnant hero are the same person, just look at the style of writing. I can't believe someone could make such disrespectful comments about our firemen. How do you know you were the only one to call 911? How do you know all the other drivers even saw the smoke? There are a lot of news stories about fires, accidents, etc that do not mention the persons name who called 911!

One of my good friends on Facebook linked me to this story and instead of talking about the good job our volunteer fire fighter do like he usually does, he commented on that stupid Prego Lady's post instead with this...
"Its proof that everyone these days has to be recognized for what they do. It sickens me to see the attention craving people like that. Ever hear military personel brag that they put their life on the line? No. With the countless police, EMS, and firefighters I know none of them brag that when they get the call they put their life on hold for us. Unbelieveable. Can't stand people like that lady."
Again, as some people have posted above, you are just self centered and looking for attetion, you need some serious help and need to be taught how to thank our men and women who suit up when the call comes through for them to stop what they are doing and save us.
I'm 19 years old and an Eagle Scout, I've saved two lives in my lifetime but the only people who knew that were me, the person I saved, and the people who saw it take place. I was given no honorable mention, no medal, I just get to live with the satisfaction of knowing I made a difference and you know what, thats more than enough for me. Not even my best freinds know that I did this because I don't brag about it like you do. I'm not a egotistical, arrogant, and brash individual like yourself.

Wow, lol. I have to laugh at this argument because it's ridiculous. The St. Michael and Albertville fire departments responded, no one was hurt (thank god) and there was minimal damage..there, I summed it up in one sentence. This world thrives on the human decency of good people and those good people go un-noticed all the time. It doesn’t mean they are any more or less important than next good person. There are millions of heroes in the world who deserve praise and never get it. The truth as to why people do what they do is not for praise or glory, it's about knowing that they have the ability to make a difference in the world no matter how big or small it may be. I'm a trained first responder and speaking from personal experience, that's the reason that I went through the training, to make a difference. The rest is just BS. I know several fire fighters, police officers, paramedics and soldiers, not one of whom does it for the glory and they certainly don't do it for the money. They do it because they can go to sleep at night knowing that they helped make the world a better place. Being a hero means different things to different people, to me it means "an incredible act of courage, bravery or selflessness".
Yes Prego hero, you should be proud of yourself and you are a credit to your community however, public grandstanding and padding yourself on the back will not get you the person of the year award that you seem to crave so badly. You did a good thing, leave it at that.

By the way Pregnant Hero feels the need to "shout from the roof top", I get the impression that this is the first time she has done something good to help others and she doesn't know how to handle it. How sad, but hopefully it's a stepping stone to more good deeds since she now knows how good it makes her feel. She'll also learn (hopefully) to be a little more humble about it.
This has certainly been the most entertaining read on the Patch for quite some time.

For heaven's sake! I think the term HERO is so over-used. Everyone's a hero these days and it really takes away from the real thing. Hero to me are those fire fighters and police who went into the twin towers on 9/11, knowing they probably weren't going to make it out, but they did it anyway. Those Marines and National Guard members who look at their families one last time from the window of a bus as they leave for a year deployment overseas, knowing that might be the last sight they have of them. EVER. That's a real hero.
It's really too bad this has gotten to the point it has on here.
