For the Second Time in a Year, Some St. Michael Communications Go Dark

If you had service via Charter Cable or Verizon, you were missing out yesterday in St. Michael and beyond.

Another fall-like day. Another day in the dark for Charter customers and those who use Verizon Wireless.

According to a direct Tweet placed Tuesday afternoon to Charter Communications, St. Michael and Albertville were left in the dark, as well as some surrounding areas, including Elk River and Monticello.

The incident happened shortly after lunch Tuesday. It's not known where, exactly, as of yet. But a cable was hit in the area, disrupting Charter services, Verizon Wireless connections and other communications services (Dish Network, for example).

What happened?

Well, we're still searching.

It's the second time in less than a year. The same, nearly exact scenario (it was even on a Tuesday) played out in mid-September 2011, to the same set of customers.

More when we know the rest of the story (with all apologies to Paul Harvey).

Charter Communication is without a doubt the WORST internet & cable provider I have ever dealt with. When you have a problem they send you to a third world country to speak to a customer service rep you can't understand. And either there Internet or Cable goes out at least twice a week.

Thanks for reporting on this! I was so frustrated to lose internet AND my cell phone. I wondered if there was a connection! Charter is horrible and cuts out service quite frequently and won't admit it. On the other hand, we have Century Link which oversold the area and the internet connection is so slow that you can't use Hulu or Netflix!

I feel bad for the people that have poor experiences with Charter but I've been a customer in 4 different towns in 19 years and have NEVER had problems with them before. I don't even think I've been troubled by general outages more than 10 times in all of those years. They seem to respond very quickly to problems and fix outages quickly too. I would ask for and get a refund for time during an outage. Maybe I'm just lucky but it seems like I get what I pay for and am a very happy customer. I actually like Charter quite a lot. I don't work for them or get any perks for sticking up for them! I just really have never had major problems and small problems have gotten solved in a timely and satisfactory manner. I do not have a home phone but use internet and cable services from them. If I worked at home and needed internet service, I imagine that ANY disruption in service would be infuriating though.

The outage was caused by a fiber optics cable being cut by Xcel Energy. Not Charter or Verizon's fault.

Tips: If your call is sent to an offshore Customer Service, hang up and call back.
Be nice. These people have a tough job and they want to help you.

The woman I spoke with offered me a refund for the outage without a request from me. I do work from home and didn't have a car to get to another wifi site so it did set me back as well.

I think it depends on where you live. I've lived in Albertville since 87 and we used to live on Main Ave and never had problems with Charter and since moving to the Albertvilla's developement 9 years ago, all we've had is problems. We switched to dish for two years and we never ever had a single outage or reception problem. We switched back to Charter as the dish was getting too expensive and once again nothing but problems. I guess you get what you pay for even tho I feel like we're getting gouged!

The Charter employee we talked to said that they were doing improvements to our service so that we would have a faster internet connection. I was wondering why they would shut us down and do improvements during the work day. I guess they lied to me.

Mike, looks like they are down again today. service is partial but I run business connection using VOIP phone service through my employer and not enough power to sustain my connection.
