Greenfield Marine Killed in Afghanistan

A 21-year-old veteran who joined the Marines fresh out of high school, Lance Cpl. Robert S. Greniger was a combat engineer.

 Greenfield, Minn., a small community about 8 miles straight south of St. Michael, mourns today as the remains of Lance Cpl. Robert Greniger, 21, return home this weekend.

Greniger, who was a combat engineer assigned to the Second Combat Engineer Battalion, Second Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, was killed in Helmand Province Tuesday, July 12, in an IED blast, according to Associated Press reports.

He was the second Minnesota soldier killed in the past two weeks. Marine Sgt. Chad Frokjer of Maplewood was killed June 30 in combat, also in Helmand Province.

Ceremonies, including military honors, and a funeral will be held for Greniger at Rockford High School Community Center. He was a 2009 graduate of Rockford High.
