Marketplace in St. Michael: 'Race to Get the Last Twinkie'

The grocery store — the only one in the area to carry Hostess products — sold it's last box of Twinkies Friday.

In the St. Michael grocery aisles, Twinkies have been declared extinct.

The only Hostess product left on the shelves of The Marketplace in St. Michael are the Donettes Crumb Mini Donuts.

"And believe me, those are pretty crummy," said The Marketplace customer service manager Jason Prigge.

Prigge personally sold the last box of Twinkies — the last he believes was sold in the St. Michael-Albertville area — Friday afternoon, shortly before 3 p.m.

Coborn's in Albertville never carried Hostess products — the store only carries Little Debbie products.

The product flew off the shelves at The Marketplace just hours after Hostess Brands Inc., announced that it has been "forced by a Bakers Union strike to shut down all operations and sell all company assets," according to its brand website.

Several people have went on a Twinkie hunt today, asking Prigge whether the store has any left. He counted between 10 and 15 people trolling for Twinkies this afternoon during his shift.

"I think it's more of a race to get the last Twinkie," he said. "I don’t think they were disappointed — no one really wants to eat something that has a 60-year shelf life. Twinkie's were made to last 60 years on the shelf."

He added that the hurry to hunt down the last Hostess product has brought amusement to his day.

"I think it's funny," Prigge said, adding that he's unsure if something will likely come out to replace Hostess snacks. "(Hostess) noted that they'll sell their recipe, so we'll see."

Thanks for the note! I talked to someone in customer service at Coborn's who double checked with another employee and said they never carried Hostess. Which Hostess products did you used to see?

Coborns always carried Twinkies, Ho Ho's, Suzy Q's, all the little donuts that Hostess used to make. I've been buying their products there for years. Target in Rogers and Otsego also carry (oops, carried) Hostess products. Every convenience store I've ever been in had Hostess products. In fact, I don't know of a grocery &/or convienence store that I've ever been in, in the STMA area or anywhere that DIDN'T carry hostess products.
