Michele Bachmann Reacts to President Obama's State of the Union Address
The sixth congressional district representative released her response shortly after the speech Tuesday night.
OUTSIDE MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- Sixth Congressional Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) released the following statement after President Barack Obama's Tuesday night State of the Union address:
"Tonight, we heard more of the same calls for bigger government—and smaller citizens—from President Obama. In his first term, President Obama’s answer to America’s economic challenges has been to tax more and spend more. Four years later, the unemployment rate is higher today than when the President was first sworn into office. The number of Americans on food stamps has soared by more than 46 percent—up to 47 million people. And median household incomes have dropped by 7 percent.
"These are not just numbers, they are real people with real stories. From small town bankers in Kimball, MN to job creators in Watertown, MN, the small business owners I’ve talked with are telling me that increased taxes and burdensome regulations are crippling their businesses and hurting their bottom line.
"When government takes even more of what we make, then we get to keep a lot less of what we earn. Sadly, that doesn’t lead to increasing wages or bringing down the basic costs of living for most people.
"When it comes to investing in our future, we need to reprioritize our spending to achieve objectives that will help all Americans, not just well-connected donors or companies with high-paid lobbyists. All spending isn't created equal. Too much money from President Obama’s stimulus package made its way to companies associated with his political contributors. Imagine if we spent that money on new roads and bridges that Americans desperately need.
"In Minnesota’s Sixth District, for example, we have real transportation needs. We need to expand I-94 and upgrade Highway 10. We’re also working towards regular air service out of the St. Cloud Airport to a major hub like Chicago. Just like the new Stillwater Bridge, these important projects will yield direct economic benefits to the community. These are the type of job-creating projects worthy of further investment – not politically-connected companies like the bankrupt Solyndra.
"Instead of President Obama’s laundry list of big government proposals, we should be laser-focused on getting to a stable, growing economy where wages expand and the cost of daily items like groceries and gas go down. Here are a few solutions to grow the economy:
- Legalize America’s abundant energy resources, which would lead to an explosion in jobs and economic growth. The Keystone XL Pipeline is one commonsense example.
- Reform and simplify the tax code to make America more competitive in the global economy. America has the highest corporate tax rate in the world, which hinders economic growth.
- Expand school choice to make a quality education accessible to help every child succeed in school and life. Making more classes available online would also help retrain our workforce.
- Focus on free market health care solutions that give patients more choices. The onerous medical device tax from Obamacare cripples innovation and sends jobs overseas. It must be repealed.
"Despite the bleak economic numbers from the last four years, I remain optimistic. Our nation’s history has been built upon the triumph of hard work and ingenuity. We ventured west, we invented, we went to space. No matter the obstacle, we overcame it. It’s in our blood as a nation. Our future and our children are depending on our getting the economy right."

Right on the money Michele. This President is nothing but a little boy in a mans body. He is totally unfit to be President. He may be a Commander in Chief, but that's just a title. He has no idea nor respect how the military operates. Sure he can hand out the Medal of Honor, but he has no honor. He is bankrupting this country. He is destroying the value of the dollar. And he is crippling our infrastructure by going after utilities and the petroleum industry. His war on guns is a charade. anyone who can't operate without a teleprompter is not worthy of being POTUS. Unfortunately him and his socialist ilk such as Bill Ayers have totally poisoned half the populace into thinking it's somehow cool to be a eurosocialist.

You spout mere talking points spoon fed to you by conservative media in mind-wash fashion. WAKE UP! Provide some suggestions or solutions. You appear to be just like Ms. Bachman - lots of complaining, but doing no work to legislate meaningful change. Her claim to fame is getting re-elected. Shame on the Minnesotans voting for her.

Rick, may you have your wish someday and have a wild eyed Theocrat as your POTUS. Perhaps on that fine day we can get our guns back but only if we declare ourselves Christians and take the mark. Our schools can teach (intelligent?) design and history can be rewritten by the Ministry of Propaganda. We can live the Christian doctrine by abandoning the poor and the needy. Hmm WWJD? We will celebrate the ever widening gap between the rich and the poor and those in the middle, you, Rick, can wonder what happened as you are jobless without any benefits or healthcare for your family. Perhaps you will show all how it's done as you pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get rich over night. You will do this by virtue of your christian education which will not focus on the devils arts like math and science but the literal Bible. The rest of the world will pass us by as we become a second world nation who can no longer afford to be strong because of the lack of revenue. The poor can't pay taxes, the rich don't have to and there is no longer a middle class in Michelle's Utopia. We will live under Sharia like religious laws but we will still be free because we can have guns. Oh, but who can afford them?

Not true. The problem with the dumb masses is that they were easily swayed by George Bush and agreed to declaring two unnecessary, costly wars. Add the cost of those two wars to the additional borrowing it took to salvage our banks and brokers and you will understand our massive national debt. We're so broke we can't even borrow money to fix our roads and bridges or build rapid transit systems or upgrade our schools. And the Republican answer is still unchanged: lower taxes for the wealthy and cut entitlements -- measures that destroy what little is left of a battered America. .

Unfortunately, the Republicans keep repeating the same old lie. Perhaps they think that if they say it enough it becomes the truth. Wrong. There were many studies done by economist to PROVE that when taxes go down for businesses, they do NOT "create" more jobs, hire more people,or raise salaries. They simply pocket more profit for themselves, invest a bit more,or buy another vacation home. In the Reagan era,it was called "trickle down economics".It's been thoroughly disproven and yet the increasingly irrelevant Republicans will not let go of this fantasy idea.

I must agree that Rep. Bachmann is a perfect example of what Gov. Bobby Jindal of LA. must have had in mind when he asked the Republican party to stop being the stupid party. However her remarks somewhat hang together. The responses from the few who care to respond to her comments certainly don't indicate anything any better. Karen, get out from under the rock. If you say there were many studies that PROVE, well what studies, you're no different than Bachmann with that statement. And by the way the most recent studies by economist indicate just the opposite. Those studies were performed by the Federal Government's Congressional Budget Office and Ernst & Young, yes they were both performed during Obama's last term. Those studies indicate 2.6 million (CBO) and 3.4 million jobs (E&Y) respectively that will be lost over the next 10 years with the tax increased proposed and implemented by Obama. Karen you probably need to stay under the rock, keep making up more things that prove something only in your mind.

I agree that Obama has created more jobs but they are all in the Gun Manufacture and ammunition sales. The only other jobs the current administration can take credit for are jobs dealing with all the government red tape which only reduces the effectivness of a company and adds cost to the consumer. I do agree that when the current government totaly destroys this country that the liberlas will go to another country or back to where they came from and maybe then the people who still believe in the founding fathers views we can rebuild this country. The republicans and Democrates have done nothing but made things worse for America. The Myans were right about the world as we know it ending in 2012.

Can you explain in a logical manor how raising the national debt devaluing the dollar will help improve anything in America? How taking guns away from the honest people will make the people who do not follow the laws start following them? Or how destroying all of our nuclear weapons will make other countries get rid of theirs. How does forcing the rich people to move the rest of their companies to other countries help America? I am trying to understand why so many people in America are voting to go to Communism when we see it didn’t work out for Cuba, Russia or China. Yes China is starting to turn Capitalistic and they now have taken over from the US as the leading country in the world. I would like to see both sides of the issue but the liberal side is so un-logical that I can’t understand a thing they are standing for. Everything the founding fathers warned us against has happened and the destruction of the American way of life is so obvious a blind person can see it. Liberals always just laugh and say I am not even going to waste my time when you ask for a logical answer which really shocks me because a lot of them have college educations.

And her "free market health care solutions" (i.e., blocking payments to you by insurance companies) have been dismal failures, with the U.S. ranked 27th worldwide in health care but first in health care spending.

As she becomes increasingly irrelevant, Ms. Bachman feels this 'need' to put forth her view on the Presidents address. No one really cares about what she thinks-nationally or locally. way more than conservatives want to admit, but here's one, back in the day the govt offered permits for oil exploration on govt land, the big oil grabbed them up,there were a limited amount of these permits and a one time thing, they elected to back hold these permits so no one could use them, after all there's less liability involved when you import, refine, and sell,as opposed to all the people it takes to drill for oil and all the associated cost, problem was it not only did not create jobs,it closed down many smaller oil companies especially in texas where oil fields were the staple,so obama, the person you say has done nothing took those permits back and issued them to companies that have already created many jobs over one million last year and 3.3 million in I believe, in the next 5 years, this is not fox news this is info from the people who are drilling that oil, if you spent as much time reading anything but fox you'd know this already, and be amazed at what else you might learn

Certainly curbing and paying off the nation's debt is and should be important to all but Bachmann and her cronies seem to have forgotten a few things:
1. They got walloped in the general election a few short months ago, largely because their message failed to resonate beyond their own limited base. Still doesn't.
2. Where was "Dubya" during the last election cycle? Republicans like to ignore those 8 years as if they never happened. It was also due largely to the policies of those years that the country got itself into this mess in the first place. Conveniently, the party of "NO" also seems to behave as if President Obama should have resolved all of that mess within his first year after taking office. What nonsense.
3. While on the subject of "W", whatever became of all those jobs the now-famous "JOB CREATORS" were going to create as a result of the BUSH TAX CUTS? And whatever became of the positive effect those tax cuts were supposed to have on cutting the nation's debt. NEVER HAPPENED, DID IT?
4. Fixing the debt problem is going to take a cooperative, non-partisan, step-wise approach, when the overall economy is back in decent shape. In the meantime, gtting the economy back on solid ground, even if it means spending money, is a good investment.
And don't get me started about that completely obnoxious Mitch ("MY SOLE INTENT IS TO MAKE OBAMA A ONE-TERM PRESIDENT") McConnell.

Oh yes.. this is the same Michelle "I spy..with my eye.. A Muslim!" Bachmann..using that laser guided eye to note that HER district needs improvements on like the Interstate and Highway 10..and maybe an airport upgrade so those poor and isolated St. Clouder's can get to Chicago, you know?..without having to resort to dog sleds for 8 months.
To libertarians, those would be local issues, requiring local response and local money...or maybe a private corporation who figured out a way to make some.. BUT nah.. used to be called 'pork' back in the day..Up there, no doubt it's called 'white fish'.

If you watch Fox News and believe it then you have a problem. Most liberal watch different shows on different channels. Most republican only watch Fox News. That is the problem for many republicans. All Fox News does is lie, just like when they said Romney was going to win the election.

All I kept thinking during Obama's speech was that it was a great vision of America & what America can do if we put our efforts together, but I realized that the forces of obstruction would make none of it happen due to their blind aversion to progress. The conservatives offer zero plan to advance America & Obama is the right on target leader America needs. It is a shame that all these people do is bitch about him & continue to cause America to stagnate.
The very fact that people vote for, & agree with crazy people like Bachman is good however because they are continuing to showcase their mindless obstruction & are relegating themselves to the dung heap of history with a resounding SPLAT.

So when her "farm" gets a quarter million dollars in federal subsidies and her husband gets 30 grand for training employees from the feds and she takes trips on special interests dimes, that would make her a taker or a maker? Her farm, by the way is in Independence WI. Unfortunately independent she is not. Just another rich person on the taxpayers dime. Feel free to pay us back Michele.

All members of congress and senate regardless of party affiliation are among the 1% they claim to hate. All of them are not required to report all of thier income for taxation. All of them can legally perform insider trading which is illegal for the rest of us. All of them get a raise every year. All of them get free healthcare for life and are exempt from the health care reform act. None of them understand economics because if they did then our economy wouldn't be in the shape it is now. Any person who thinks that the government spending more money on itself and/or increased entitlement spending is going to help solve the economic problems has some sort of mental blockage that prevents said person from thinking in a rational logical manner. Any person who does not believe in the principles upon which this country was founded and that made it great is unpatriotic .Neither party has a plan that will work because neither party is willing to admit that the core beliefs of thier party that they do thier best to force upon the American citizenry is the cause of the economic and social problems plaguing the country. Wake up and smell the coffee people. If you think that either party has your best interest as thier main objective then you're sadly mistaken and misinformed. For those of you who choose to call a person a racist or a bigot simply because they do like President Obama because of his policies I feel sorry for you because you truly are an unintelligent person.

Really enjoy reading the comments. They reinforce my belief that Michelle Bachmann will do anything to to extend her 15 minutes of fame. She has not yet accepted the fact that she could not generate the support of even her own party last year during the presidential campaign. The negative comments in this blog are by far the majority. The big question is, why do we continue to pay any attention to someone irrelevant. The woman has a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease. Someone "get the hook!"

Michelle Bachman says: Expand school choice to make a quality education accessible
Too bad this concept wasn't offered during her developing days. She is, no doubt, the dumbest, irritating, nauseating, most disgusting female(?) of today. And she tell lies so fluently, She has the audacity to talk about Obama when she can't measure up to a fraction of his intelligence or education. She can best serve by going back to MN and take care of her "wife" while he(?) "Prays away the Gays." Good Luck with that!

Liberals are laughable. I read "most" of the comments in here. The ones I blew past had some sort of vile attack in the first sentence, so it's not worth reading. The liberal mantra is on full display here. Attack, name call, but offer no facts. Why don't all you libs do this. Go back and re-read the comments of your cohorts and ask yourself this: are you truly proud of yourselves and would you say the same about your mother? The lack of respect from you people is a disgrace. You may not believe in her policies as I surely don't believe in Obama's, but the language and vitriol is truly pathetic.

Sorry. My comments re. the President aren't even in the same league compared to the vitriolic hatred spewed by those from the left.
There is zero comparison. Sway and defer, obfiscate all you want. The facts are in the attacks penned my liberals above.
The question I have for the liberals is this: Do you seriously see no issue with our freedoms being taken away? Do you seriously have no issue with the government ordering what you can and can't do? Do you seriously have no issue with this POTUS regulating business out of existence? Do you seriously enjoy paying more at the store for goods and services because this POTUS has run a buzzsaw through the value of the dollar? Do you seriously have no issue with paying $4 for a gallon of gas after this POTUS has declared that he will purposefully run up the commodity price on oil? Do you seriously have no issue with paying a higher electric bill because this POTUS has personally declared war on coal fired powerplants? Do you seriously have no issue with unemployment sitting at 8%+ for this POTUS' entire first term and leading into the second with no "hope" in sight. Do you seriously have no issue with business' flight to foreign markets bacause this POTUS and his policies are destroying the infrastructure of this country? And those businesses are taking flight to such "environmentally responsible countries such as China and India, where restrictions on coal fired powerplants are non existent.
Ask yourselves those questions.

What the hell does she do in congress that gets her re-elected?! I just don't get it. She did nothing when a republican was president and continues to do nothing with a democrat as president. Eileen, are you serious? So am I correct in stating that you are equating a Congressman/woman with the President? You may want to check on exactly how many elected Representatives there are in Congress and how many submit bills that actually make it just to the floor of the House. And she's still a junior member of Congress which means her status in committees is not as high as senior members.
It continues to baffle me that people with no real knowledge of how government works continue to place the noose around their own necks...

mike savick
10:45 am on Thursday, February 21, 2013
Talking about obstinate, the tea party leadership of the US House of Representatives and Senate pledged to block everything our newly elected president ever did in order to prevent his reelection regardless of whom or what it they hurt. I guess they will try again to prevent him from getting reelected (even though there is a two term limit). No one ever used the debt ceiling, which is not in the Constitution, as a political weapon before. Remember how many businesses were hurt and world markets were shaken when they nearly ruined our nations credit rating?
There were record numbers of blocked legislation and filibusters. The truth is the President tried every means possible to communicate and compromise except call Boehner and McConnell "masta"
I often notice that tea party members are unwilling to recommend spending cuts to military bases and contracts to businesses in their states. Perhaps they really know that taxes eventually end up in the private sector directly or in the hands of consumers.
Actually skillful new representatives get useful legislation passed by working with leadership and getting more experienced members of congress to cosponsor their initiatives. Bachmann has been nothing but corrosive and many Republicans want nothing to do with her.
Rick

Good Lord Mike, I don't know where to start...
First, so you advocate changing the United States Constitution so a sitting President may serve three or more terms? Need I remind you that this amendment was put in place primarily so America would not become a mirror image of the rest of the dictatorships and monarcy's that exist throughout the world. People realize change is good. Most countries have adopted something similar to our two term limit.
It is on record Mike the countless times that Republican leadership have reached out to Obama only to be turned away. Keep in mind. This is the same POTUS who routinely misses the daily intelligence briefs, something every other President before him did first thing in the morning. This is a President who is damging the economy of this country so severely, he actually has people behind him championing eliminating the debt ceiling. As a fact, he also has people touting the seizure of 401k's and having the gvmt run them with a guaranteed 3% return.
I could go on. However I will simply state this. Everything I have typed has historical implications and in itself is evidenced of failure throughout history. Lastly, wait until 2014 when obamacare kicks in. It will take about 6-12 months for people to realize that getting just a physical will now become a three month or longer episode.
mike savick
9:37 am on Friday, February 22, 2013
You don't know here to start becasue you didn't read my comment or any thing else. I acknowledged that the president is term limited (in parenthesis) but the tea party is still acting like they are trying to prevent his reelection. The debrt ceiling is a bogus concept because Congress and the president already allocated and spent hte money in the budget process. You nave no proof to delays for health care.
Rick
3:00 am on Saturday, February 23, 2013
Interesting that money has been spent and Obama still has never submitted a budget.
No proof for delays of health care? Mike, exactly what do you think is going to happen with a minimum of 32,000,000 people added to the health system and don't have to pay one cent for it? And what do you think will happen when the illegal aliens that are here are made honorary citizens, which is tantamount to a punch in my gut as well as everyone else who emigrated here and did it legally? And speaking of my moving here, I am formerly Canadian. I have personally experienced the "great system that Canada has as many Americans like to say. Funny though... When I ask my fellow citizens when was the last time they were treated in a Canadian hospital, they get very quiet. When was the last time you were in a Canadian hospital Mike? I have relatives who work in health care up there. They say it's actually worse now than before I moved here. It is attrocious. The hospitals are overburdened from lack of staffing and facilities. Get a smack on the head and have concussion like symptoms? Good luck getting an MRI. Preventative healthcare? Good luck. My Uncle died of colon cancer Mike, as you know a very treatable disease. Canada has destroyed it's military to save it's healthcare system. They got away with it because we're their neighbors. Who are we going to turn to when we have to pilliage our military budget to support this coming onslaught of spending?
mike savick
3:40 pm on Saturday, February 23, 2013
We are already paying an extroadinarily high price for uninshured people. Health care facilities and professionals are required, as they should be, to treat all emergencies and diagnose and treat severe illness. Uninsured people also get sick and lack of coverage become a drag on the system. Uninsured people wait until they are extremely ill, cost more to treat with out reimbursement and lose more wages. In rural areas of Canada and the US where there isn't a concentration of healthcare facilities care is less available because of geography. Health care is rationed now depending geography, employment and what your employer, if you have one, is willing to cover and contribute to the costs. People who work several part time jobs get no benefits at all. $7000 deductables can be very intimidating. In the mean time how much are you willing to spend in taxes to deport 11 or 12 million people? Whidh militrary bases of defenes contracts are you volunteering to close to cut expenses? Fortunately you can't become president, but if the US has becoming something so terrible and you are feeling so abused, you can become Canadian again.
Rick

Mike, I find your comments degrading and insulting. Don't attempt to deflect from the dialogue by slamming me. While you may not agree with my comments, you could be more respectful in digesting my opinion and looking at things from the other side.
Quite simply, this country has many ills. Where does one stop after free health care? This country gives everyone unbridled opportunity. We make what we want of ourselves here. No other country on this planet offers the chances to get ahead as this one. That is outlined quite succinctly in the Constitution via the equal protection clause. My point is this. I am not one for rewarding someone for sitting on their rear end and doing nothing. But as we continue down this path of entitlements (and that's a gross misuse of that word if anything) sooner or later the people riding in the cart will overwhelm those whom are pulling it. You want to see anarchy? Wait until the free ride ends. I think it's a pure disgrace that the democratic party has taken to hand out freebies in order to get votes. Yes, you can throw out the vaunted "tax breaks for corporations," but that is a moot argument.
I don't follow your military comment. Canada destroyed their military to support their healthcare
Our society has created these ills. We no longer value marriage and child rearing like we once did. We have ostracized religion. Our moral compass has been shattered. Drug and alcohol usage is championed by Hoolywood. So should we expect anything else?
Mike Hindin
3:09 pm on Monday, February 25, 2013
My moral compasS is fine. No one seems to be attacking Canada. My adult children are well raised and great people. I don't have to enforce my religion on others. My marriage is not threatened by anyone else deciding to marry or not. There are challenges yet to be met in the US including equal opportunities for all. Check the disparity in pay for women and persons of color. I'm told by conservative economists that tax breaks "distort the market" when alternative energy sources ask for them but not when oil companies get them?
Why is special tax treatment for oil companies etc a "moot point?" The price of fuels are artificially fixed on a "global market" when very little oil is imported any more. Someone has indigestion in Saudi and North Dakota and Canadian crude go up in Minnesota? How convenient for the Koch brothers who have the largest refininery within trucking distance of Minnesta.
