Parent Talk: Spring Break In St. Michael-Albertville
Spring break returned to St. Michael-Albertville this year for the first time in several years.
Spring break finally returned to St. Michael-Albertville and the weather this week couldn’t have been planned to be better. With temperatures in the 70 degree range, the parks are already getting great traffic and most kids already have their bikes down.
Personally I’ve got a love/hate relationship with spring break. I love the time off of the routine of life, no packing of lunches, no setting of alarm clocks and just a little more flexibility in the day to do. The hate comes in with the lack of structure (especially at bedtime!) and the most popular question in our house, Can I have a sleepover?
The decision to add a spring break to this year’s school calendar was a popular discussion last year for the school board who received multiple requests from families to add one.
“We’ve had a lot of constituent feedback,” board member Doug Birk said last year.
Former Superintendent Dr. Marcia Ziegler explained that it’s not as simple as just giving the kids a week off in March. There’s testing dates and contract dates and end of the year dates to keep in mind when finding the chunk of time to take off.
Patch asked on Facebook last week what St. Michael-Albertville had planned this week and many were headed out of town. Florida, California, The Dells and even a Disney Cruise.
But would you have taken those trips without spring break?
Now that we have a spring break, what do you think? Did you plan your vacation around the dates or just take the kids out of school a different week? Are you taking time off of work to run with the kids or is life business as usual around your house?
Patch wants to know how it is you’re spending spring break and if having a spring break matters to you and your family.
