Principal's Message: An Update from St. Michael Elementary

With more than 100 days now passed in this school year, St. Michael Elementary is taking aim at the ending of another successful journey, according to Principal Shelia Bichler

As the saying goes, “It takes a village,” and that is truly how it works every day at St. Michael Elementary School.   Our students feel challenged and connected because every staff member works closely with them on a day-to-day and minute-to-minute basis.

Our specialists - physical education, art, music, library, reading and high potential teachers - are committed to assisting children in the learning process.  They see success when students smile on our daily news show, when they’ve mastered all the events at Fitness Frenzy, when they perform their annual concert, when art work is displayed throughout the school, and when they increase their reading or win an academic competition.  As teachers, they celebrate the love of learning and achievement with their students.

The first grade team of teachers say we are great because our staff is friendly, caring, and willing to work together for our students.  They accomplish this through common teacher time which emphasizes working for the benefit of all students, not just those in our own individual classrooms.  PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) gives us a common language and expectations that work for all students.

Second grade teachers state that our school has an energetic staff, very hard-working students, and of course, supportive parents.  The academic relationship between home and school is vital to student success!

The special education team maintains that our school is great because of all the support the classroom teachers and administration provide for their student’s specific needs.

The third grade staff feel that St. Michael Elementary is a great school because of the very polite and responsible students we have.  Our supportive and active families instill those values in their children.

St. Michael Elementary is great because we have a welcoming atmosphere felt by all who enter states our fourth grade team.  This is evident as the students and staff show positive character traits daily.  All of our teachers take pride in making learning meaningful through lesson innovation and activities using the latest technology and best practices in education.

We have a support staff that is comprised of paraprofessionals, office staff, health associate/nurse, custodians, and kitchen employees.  Their efforts make sure every child is treated as an individual and that instruction is tailored to meet the needs of each child.  The staff is very pro-active in learning new educational tools and/or strategies to ensure that students are learning, eat nutritious lunches, and attend school every day in a safe, healthy and positive learning environment.  Our school thrives on strong parent involvement—parents, students, and staff all benefit!

St. Michael Elementary has a strong connection to both the local community and the world as a whole.  Over the past few years, our students, staff, and parents have raised thousands of dollars to help the Hanover Food Shelf, the American Heart Association/”Jump Rope for Heart”, the Red Cross/Hurricane Katrina and victims of the Japanese tidal wave, food for children in Haiti/”Helping Hands”, “Adopt a School” gift cards for students affected by Hurricane Sandy, and many other “crises” we hear about.  This spring we will be collecting for the Minnesota Special Olympics—a cause near and dear to our students and families.

Summing up, the dedicated staff at St. Michael Elementary provides a high quality education for every child in our school.  We believe that all students can achieve success through a supportive, nurturing, and rigorous academic environment.  We also believe that our parents support is vital, and we are so very proud of the relationship that St. Michael Elementary has with our families.

St. Michael Elementary is a special place!  I invite you to become part of our school and student’s success.  If you can, step forward and volunteer to share your time and talents with us.  We look forward to seeing you soon!
