St. Michael Mom Part of Breastfeeding Flash Mob in St. Cloud

A dozen or so moms from St. Cloud, Little Falls and St. Michael met at Crossroads Center in St. Cloud Tuesday.

This week is known as World Breastfeeding Week around the world where over 70 countries participate. How do countries participate? Various ways really from passing information, sharing their breastfeeding story and also planning flash mobs and nurse ins.

Social media helps play a role in getting the message out there as Monday news of a local flash mob/nurse in in St. Cloud was spread only on Facebook and yet the nursing mothers came.

A dozen or so moms from St. Cloud, Little Falls and St. Michael met at Crossroads Center in St. Cloud Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. to stage their own nurse-in. Coordinated by Little Falls resident, Amy Opatz, who also owns and runs Perfect Harmony Lactation and Doula services out of Little Falls.

“We want this to show people that it’s ok to feed your baby where you please. It’s not only ok, it’s your right. The more out in the open it is the more comfortable others will be,” Opatz shared.

St. Michael mom, Stacey Anderson, came to the event with her 9 month old daughter and shared, “I support this group and wanted to be able to meet and interact with others who see the same value in breastfeeding.”

The moms and women present were clear that they wanted to reduce the stigma associated with breastfeeding.

“Breastfeeding is normal!” Meredith Barth of St. Cloud, shared, “It’s important to see other women breastfeeding. That’s why we do this.”

While the group didn’t do the flash mob "dance" shown on the World Breastfeeding Week website, they did stage their nurse in for a photo.

“The dance would have been a little complicated to coordinate,” Barth, who is also the leader of Holistic Parenting/Central MN chapter, shared.
