Hills with decades of sledding history are blanketed with snow and ready for those young and old to take to a favorite winter activity — sledding.

As the days slide into the midst of winter, families new to the area, or those with sledding on their list of adventures this season, have a few options when picking local sledding hills.

Highwoods Park in St. Michael features a huge hill that's perfect for sledding. Appropriate for all ages, one side has a huge drop-down to the townhome area below, and the other face of the hill is a smaller slope, fit for the younger ones.

The sledding hill at Highwoods used to be part of a farm field, until widespread development took place in the area in the early 2000s, said St. Michael Community Development Director Marc Weigle.

Another favorite spot in St. Michael is a hill near Rambling Creek, across from County Road 19 and the St. Michael Fire Department. The Killian family owns this land, but children have been sledding there for decades.

Weigle noted he has also seen sledders at County Road 119 and eastbound County Road 35, just south of St. Michael Elementary School.

"It's kind of a mound of dirt that a developer had put there for future development," he said.

Otsego also offers a sledding spot at their main park, Prairie Park.

The City of St. Michael occasionally gets feedback from residents asking for better sledding areas, but this happens rarely, Weigle said.

"We really haven't gotten a lot of requests for providing a bigger or better facility for sledding," Weigle said "Maybe a comment or two a year, but it's not a real strong request."

I really appreciated this article a lot! The kids and I hit the Highwoods Park hill today because of it and it was great! The steep side was great for the big kids and the other side good for the littlest one. Thanks!
