Oscars 2013: The Complete Academy Awards Nominations List

This year's contenders were announced last week and we'll find out Feb. 24 who wins. Find out where and when to watch in the St. Michael area.

  Want to know what the Oscars will look like this year? We've got a rundown of all the 2013 Oscar nominations below. Watch the Academy Awards live at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24. Tune in to channel 5, KSTP-TV, the local ABC channel. Pubhouse 19 in Albertville will host a viewing party that night for the public. Where will you watch the Oscars? As for this year's awards, director Steven Spielberg's historical drama "Lincoln" earned a leading 12 nominations Thursday for the 85th Annual Academy Awards, followed by Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" with 11, while the musical, "Les Miserables," directed by Tom Hooper, and David O. Beauty and the Beast, Backyard Birds, and Feeding Frenzy: Weekend Events in St. Michael

  A Beauty and the Beast performance, feeding frenzy at the nature center and a Backyard Birds program are a few of the events taking place in the area this weekend. Crow River Seniors to Star in Play Tonight

The dinner theater production is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Crow River Senior Center

  Crow River Senior Center residents are putting on a dinner theater production tonight beginning at 5 p.m. in St. Michael. The play, "Ladies at Lunch,"  will take place at the senior center, located inside the St. Michael City Center. Dinner begins at 5 p.m., and the play is set to start at 6 p.m. The production is a joint effort between the center and Family Youth Community Connections.

St. Michael Monkeys and Munchkins: Elementary Essays

St. Michael Elementary School fourth-graders reflect on their time performing in the high school Wizard of Oz musical.

  A month ago, St. Michael Elementary School students dressed as monkeys and munchkins took the stage at St. Michael-Albertville High School to participate in the Wizard of Oz musical. Director Ashley Budde told St. Michael Patch in November that she pictured a large cast and crew and wanted to get the younger kids involved. Donned in colorful attire and sporting large smiles, the younger cast frequently stirred laughter in the packed performing arts center at the performance. Fourth-graders submitted an essay to St. Michael Patch, reflecting on their experience: Wizard of Oz By: Alexis P. and Maddie H. Rogers Dance Troupe Performs at St. Michael City Center

North Ballet Youth Company brought the classic "Nutcracker" to life with dance, a story and traditional music.

Over 100 patrons saw a preview performance of the beloved holiday classic, "The Nutcracker," presented by the North Ballet Youth Company last Thursday in the St. Michael City Hall Council Chambers.  The performance, hosted by the St. Michael Library, featured a reading of the classic tale, live ballet dancers and Tchaikovsky's music as a background for the dancers. The North Ballet Youth Company, located in Rogers will be holding its full length production on Saturday, Dec. 15th at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.  Local ballet students will be joined by professional guest artists from Ballet West as well as the local Land of Lakes Choirboys. For more information go to www.northballetyouthcompany.org.

Albertville Native, Singer, Songwriter Named 'Best Vocalist of the Month'

Country and rock performer Shane Martin, who has released four albums, is set to perform this month in Albertville, Rogers, Monticello, Loretto, and St. Louis Park.

Shane Martin grew up "making noise" in an Albertville garage with his rock band in high school. Today, at "38 years young," he said, he has self-released four albums, had one of his songs featured in the television show "The Young and the Restless," was a top five finalist at this year's Texaco Country Showdown hosted by LeAnn Rimes for the title "Best New Act in Country Music.," (watch the video above) and most recently, was named the November SingerUniverse "Best Vocalist of the Month." "To me, it means that I'm on the right path and that I'm continuing to get better as a singer and songwriter," Martin said. Star Workshop, Nutcracker Ballet to Shine into St. Michael

An art workshop and Nutrcracker performance are scheduled for early December.

No Christmas tree is complete without a topper, and usually, the topper is a star. An upcoming workshop explores the star, a symbol that also represents many other holidays around the world. The art workshop, "Make Star Wire Sculptures," explores how different cultures relate to stars and holidays of the star symbol. It is set for Dec. 4 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the St. Michael Public Library. Adults, teens and children seven and older are invited to participate in making three-dimensional sculptures to take home. The workshop will include materials such as metal wires, templates and beads. Attendance is limited to 20, and preregistration is required. The program is funded in part by Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. This …

Big Woods PTO to Host Family Art Night in St. Michael

The theme at the elementary school this year is "In the Woods."

Big Woods Elementary School students will be thinking about the woods Friday night. The school's third annual Family Art Night's theme this year is "In the Woods." More than 130 families will take a large paper "tile" that features a woodland scene. "Each family works together to paint the tile in whatever way their imaginations lead them," said Kirsten Weigle, President of the Big Woods Parent-Teacher Organization. "The purpose of the evening is to give families an opportunity to enjoy a free, low-key evening of creating art together." The event, hosted by the Big Woods PTO and art teacher Kelly Dahl, results in colorful paintings displayed over ceiling tiles in the hallways and common areas of Big Woods.
