Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) Part 2 of 3 Risk Factors

Here is a list of the risk factors associated with ARMD--as you can see, there are some things you can control and some you can't.  We'll talk about prevention and treatment in our next blog!

AGE:  As the name implies, it is an age related disease!  We can't stop the march of time and ARMD usually occurs in people over the age of 60. 

SMOKING:  Research shows that smoking increases the risk of ARMD by up to 50%!

RACE:  Caucasions are much more likely to get ARMD than other races.

FAMILY HISTORY:  People with a family history of ARMD are at higher risk.

OVERALL HEALTH:  People with high cholesterol, high blood pressure and are severely overweight are at increased risk of developing ARMD.

GENDER:  Women are more likely to get ARMD than men

UV EXPOSURE:  There is variable research that UV contributes to the development of AMD
