War of Words: Kiffmeyer, Kriesel Spar after Stadium Vote

Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer, who is vying for a new Minnesota Senate Seat that would include St. Michael, Albertville and Otsego, has entered a war of words with popular Rep. John Kriesel.

A Big Lake Republican who is vying for the new Senate District 30 seat is making some noise on her way out of the Minnesota House of Representatives. Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer, who has earned the Republican nomination to run for the seat, which includes St. Michael, Albertville, Otsego and Elk River, along with Big Lake, called the Vikings stadium vote a "forced issue," and said Rep. John Kriesel, a Republican from Cottage Grove, was an author of a bill that "was a set deal between the Vikings, the Governor and the bill authors" in an end of session e-mail/letter to her constituents. That sparked a rebuttal from Kriesel, who has gone against the grain with his party on a few issues, including gay marriage, speaking out last year against the …

Salient point Mike, but then the statement Kiffmeyer made and Kriesel made can be viewed as either are correct. If user fees are "blink on" dependent on bingo money, then Kiffmeyer may be arguing there are no user fees "unless" pt/bingo revenue falls short of expectations (my own input here. Even the best statistics person can NEVER accurately predict what disposable income will be used for …   more ›

Michele Bachmann Endorses Mitt Romney for President

Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann today endorsed Mitt Romney for President of the United States.

Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann today, May 3, endorsed Mitt Romney for President of the United States. Bachmann issued the following statement on her endorsement of Romney: "This November, Americans will be at the polls with a serious choice- they can vote for more of Barack Obama's transformation of America, with more joblessness, higher energy prices, fewer opportunities for our children, more government controls, bailouts, and failed economic policies, or they can vote for a new vision of prosperity and liberty. I'm honored to announce that today, I am endorsing Governor Mitt Romney for President of the United States, a man who will preserve the American dream of prosperity and liberty. We've had a hard fought battle …

Minnesota's Rep. Michele Bachmann Endorses Romney

After waiting months to throw her name back into the presidential race, Rep. Michele Bachmann will get behind the presumptive nominee.

Local and national media outlets are reporting Rep. Michele Bachmann, who is now running for re-election in Minnesota's Sixth District, which includes St. Michael and Albertville, has given her endosement to former Gov. Mitt Romney in the Republican race for the presidential nomination. Romney, who squared off with Bachmann in the early stages of the campaign for the nomination, gets an endorsement he "needed," according to pundits, as Bachmann represents basic Tea Party beliefs embraced by staunch conservatives, who have been hesitant to embrace Romney as the party's candidate to square off against President Barack Obama. With former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich stepping out of the race earlier this week, Romney's lone challenger is…

Wright County Redistricting Settled in Split Vote

Rose Thelen and Pat Sawatzke, two sitting commissioners who would have to run against each other in the new plan, couldn't overcome the majority.

Rose Thelen and Pat Sawatzke could be facing each other in November, and at least two county commissioners are headed to retirement, as the board came down with its decision on redistricting Tuesday morning. The current Wright County Commission, tossed into a fray due to new boundaries created by population shifts and a couple of retirements, will have an almost complete overhaul when it convenes for the first time in 2013. "As an outsider looking in, it's a really intriguing process," said Sheriff Joe Hagerty, who attended the redistricting meeting. "It's going to mean a lot of change." St. Michael could, realistically, have two residents on the panel under the new plan. Eastern St. Michael will join Otsego for District 3, while western …

St. Michael Could Get Double Representation at County

As the Wright County Commission discusses its redistricting process, plans are showing St. Michael split among precinct lines. That means the city could have double representation, or none at all.

The Wright County Commission met after its regular Tuesday morning meeting yesterday as a "committee of the whole" to discuss the county's redistricting plans. Exactly 10 proposals have been pitched by Wright County Auditor Bob Hivaala, with about six of them have distinct difference. Most variances impact the St. Michael and Otsego areas, two of the fastest growing areas in the state since the 2000 Census, much less Wright County as a whole. All of those proposals are attached to this article. As a result all of the plans considered show St. Michael being split in two among the new county precincts. In most plans, St. Michael's eastern precinct (1B, which votes at St. Michael-Albertville Middle School East) would be teamed with …

Uh Mike - It would be more accurate to state that St Michael might get SPLINTERED representation at the county level. Double representation implies that St Michael would get an extra commissioner at the expense of other areas of Wright County. And in no way would St Michael have "no representation" -   more ›

Mayor, Majority Unhappy with Albertville Administrator "for Months"

Mayor Mark Meehan said in Monday's meeting the issue with Albertville City Administrator Larry Kruse had been "festering" for months, and he took action when confronted by another council member.

It didn't take long to delve into the issues at Monday's Albertville City Council meeting, as the public comment period became the only segment of the night where the dozens in attendance could weigh in on the city's latest controversy. Mayor Mark Meehan opened up the floor for public comment minutes after 7 p.m., and the first speaker-former mayor Ron Klecker-asked that Meehan wait. "I'd like to speak on Item 10A [City Administrator Performance Review], but I would like to save my comments until then," Klecker requested. However, Meehan didn't allow residents to wait, and referred to the rules of order for the meeting. He said all public comment would be taken at the outset. Council member Larry Sorenson asked for a motion to allow public…

There should have been a meeting of the entire council BEFORE Meehan asked for the resignation. And as Wagner said Hendrickson should have been informing the council of these complaints as they were coming in.   more ›

Michele Bachmann: Minnesota's Pain at the Gas Pump is Real

High gas prices affect everything – from the price of goods and services to business investments and leisure travel, Rep. Michele Bachmann says. Every time the price of gas goes up 10 cents, it costs the American economy $14 billion.

The rising price of gasoline has Minnesotans, faced with having to choose between filling their gas tanks and scrimping on other necessities, demanding answers from Washington and the White House. Gas prices have risen over 110 percent since President Obama’s inauguration and are up 30 cents a gallon just this month. A recent Reuters poll verifies what we already knew, 68 percent of Americans are unhappy with the way President Obama is dealing with high gas prices. High gas prices affect everything – from the price of goods and services to business investments and leisure travel. Every time the price of gas goes up 10 cents, it costs the American economy $14 billion. But more importantly, when gas goes up 10 cents, it costs the average …

If you want to argue that we need a safety net then let's go back to the days when the counties took care of the truly indigent. We can cooperate at the local level to provide for those who truly cannot provide for themselves. Our definition of need is subjective at best. Let's define what need really is and act on it. Most people including conservatives and libertarians are compassionate and are…   more ›

St. Michael Council Members Meet with Local Legislators in St. Paul

The City of St. Michael laid out its legislative positions, including a plea to find a financial solution behind the proposed Voter ID Amendment.

The City of St. Michael sent council members Nadine Schoen and Chris Schumm to St. Paul recently to meet with the community’s local legislators, including Rep. Joe McDonald and Sen. Amy Koch. Assistant City Administrator Steve Bot, who will become the city’s lead man when Administrator Bob Derus retires in June, accompanied the two. Schumm and Schoen returned to the Capitol, recently, for a day of meetings courtesy of the League of Minnesota Cities. While in St. Paul, the two discussed the city’s stance on a variety of proposed legislation, asking for the state to heed more communities’ calls on issues that have local impact. Near the top of the list was the so-called Voter ID Amendment, which will ask voters to approve a new police asking…

Mike The Voter ID constitutional amendment that will be voted on this November isn't "police" or policy. It would be state law. You are confusing the two. And to respond to Bot's comment -- yes, there will be additional expenses in this election cycle and the next to educate voters on the changes to voting procedure if the amendment passes. Small price to pay to remedy an overdue fix to ensure …   more ›
