Unbeaten Teams Battle in Rogers: St. Michael, Rogers Square off for Title

The Mississippi 8 crown and the top seed in Section 7-5A is on the line tonight in Rogers as the football teams lace up for a primetime matchup.

It all comes down to this.

Or does it?

St. Michael-Albertville travels to Rogers Wednesday night in a battle of unbeaten teams. The Knights (7-0) are ranked No. 3 in Class 5A according to the QRF Ranking system, which seeds teams during the playoffs. The Royals, in turn, are ranked No. 6.

The difference? While Rogers' offense has been outstanding, the Royals have racked up points on lesser opponents.

Meanwhile, the Knights have put up outstanding defensive numbers, allowing about 8 points per game in their seven outings, and actually averaging less than a touchdown in six of those seven games.

"We've got a style of football this season that I think the crowd really likes," said head coach Jared Essler. "We can play some hard-nosed defense. And then we like to open up a bit on offense."

So which side will win out? Rogers hung more than 60 points on Buffalo. Then, they did it again last week against Monticello, a team that hasn't allowed that many in the Jason Telecky era.

And does it matter? The two teams are ranked atop Section 7-5A, meaning they wouldn't see each other again until the section championship game later this month.
