Do you have a passion for the cosmetology field?  Do you want to get a head start and earn college credits before you graduate from high school?  Wright Technical Center in Buffalo offers a Cosmetology Careers class.  It is a unique course covering hair, nails, skin and styling principles.  Walking into the classroom feels like walking into a professional hair salon.  The classroom includes forty styling stations, seven shampoo stations, styling chairs, mirrors, driers, clippers, shears, curling irons, mannequins to work with and other professional styling products.

The course covers Minnesota Cosmetology Statues (Laws and Rules) and cosmetology theory including:  infection control, professional development, study of nails, scalp care, shampoo and conditioners, principles of hair design and styling, hair cutting, chemical texture, hair coloring, skin care and facials, skin growth,  structure, and skin disorders and diseases.  The course offers students the opportunity to earn college credits that are transferrable to several Minnesota Cosmetology Colleges.

The teachers are licensed cosmetologists as well as licensed instructors.  Ms. Susie Alberg and Ms. Mel Powell attended area beauty institutes.  License renewals require continuing education and continued practice within the field every three years.  They both knew they wanted to be in the cosmetology industry at a very young age.  They have a passion for cosmetology and are enthusiastic about sharing that passion with students.

Speakers from six different cosmetology colleges visit Wright Technical Center to share information about their programs, enrollment opportunities and job availability after college graduation.  Some of the many jobs available in the industry are barbers, educators, platform artists, product educators and distributors, and salon hair stylists.

If you are interested in the cosmetology field, you can find out more information about Cosmetology Careers at the Wright Technical Center web site (www.wtc.k12.mn.us).    It is a great way to start a future in the cosmetology and barbering field.  The classes are challenging and offer a hands-on opportunity to gain knowledge and skills to give students a head start before entering college.  Students are always enthusiastic about being in the class and learning more about this industry.
