Albertville Resident Named 2013 Red Cross Hero

Teresa Hazeman of Anoka and Dave Nelson of Albertville have been named as recipients of the 2013 American Red Cross Heroes Award. Two of 10 Heroes in the Northern Minnesota Red Cross Region, they will receive the Good Samaritan award at the 5th annual American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast on Thursday, June 6, 2013, for displaying courage and caring upon encountering an unusual, significant or unexpected incident.

While at work on September 20, 2012, a man collapsed in a parking lot after suffering a heart attack. The man, a co-worker of Nelson’s and Hazeman’s, fell against a truck and then landed on the pavement and hit his head.

Nelson saw that the man was unconscious, and immediately began performing CPR. Hazeman called the paramedics and relayed CPR instructions to Nelson. The ambulance arrived in moments and restored the co-worker’s heartbeat. The man was transported to the hospital where he spent 34 days before being discharged.

“We’ll be forever grateful,” says the man’s daughter. “To react that quickly and to be able to work together when many would panic, they saved my dad. Every doctor talked about how crucial Dave and Teresa were.”

Both Nelson and Hazeman are UPS employees. Nelson coaches his son in baseball, while Hazeman and her husband have a heating and air conditioning business.

This year’s Heroes will be honored at the 5th annual American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast on Thursday, June 6, at the Legends Club at Target Field in Minneapolis. The public is invited to attend, help recognize local heroes, and support local Red Cross programs and services.
