Birding in Three Rivers Park District

Now that spring has arrived, check out some of the birding events May 15-25, 2013 for all ages.

Spring Bird Hikes

Wednesday, May 15, from 6-7:30 p.m., at Silverwood Park, St. Anthony. In spring, every week a different wave of migrating birds visits Silverwood to rest up on their way back north. Binoculars are available for loan. Walk-ins are welcome. Cost is $5 and this program is for ages 16+.

Warbler Walk

Saturday, May 18, from 7-9 a.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Minneapolis. The Mississippi River is a major flyway for migrating birds. Audubon Society volunteers will be on hand to aid in identification. Bring binoculars or borrow ours. Treats will be provided for birders and birds alike. Cost is $5 and reservations are required. Great Blue Heron Shuttle

Saturday, May 18, from 2-3:30 p.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Minneapolis. It’s spring, and the great blue herons are back and nesting. Learn about their lives, and see a photo journey of their travels. Hop on the shuttle and ride to the heron rookery to view these birds. Check on the birds and check to see if there are any new hatchlings. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair. Cost is $5 and reservations are required. Bird Banding

Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m.-noon, at Lowry Nature Center, in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. See wild songbirds being safely trapped, studied and tagged with numbered rings. You may get a chance to hear a bird’s heartbeat and help release a bird. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more. Call Lowry at 763-694.-650 to reserve a start time. Drop in anytime. This program is for ages 4+.

Raptors in the Yard

Sunday, May 19, from 2-4 p.m., at Lowry Nature Center, in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. Meet a barred owl up close and personal and learn about this bird of prey. Cameras are welcome. This program is free and open to all ages.

Adult Birding Series: Bird Banding and Warbler Walk

Saturday, May 25, from 8-11 a.m., at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, Brooklyn Park. Join a master bird bander to learn why banding and data collection locally is important to scientists watching migrating bird populations nationally. Spend some time on the trails and in the field watching for resident and migrating birds to get your bird checklist off to a great start for the summer. Bring your own binoculars or borrow ours.
