Mercury Tops Century Mark in Albertville, St. Michael

You'd have to look way back – nearly 25 years – for the last time it was this hot in June.

Temperatures in St. Michael and Albertville unofficially topped the 100-degree mark Tuesday.

The National Weather Service's official observation had St. Michael at a record 99, with Albertville also at that temp.

However, obervations closer to home, including the sign at St. Michael-Albertville High School, showed the region did enter triple digits.

The last time that happened in June? Well, you'd have to go back to 1987, when:

• The Minnesota Twins were making a drive behind Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbek to the franchise's first ever World Series championship.

• St. Michael-Albertville High School was located on Main. The "old" high school (as the kids call it now) was still five years away.

• The combined population of the two communities – St. Michael and Albertville – was less than 5,000. St. Michael topped out at just over 2,500 in the census conducted three years later.

• Ronald Reagan was wrapping up his presidency, and Vice President George W. Bush was getting set to represent the Republican party, a clear frontrunner.

• The name "152 Club" made more sense to patrons than it probably does today. Old Highway 152 was integrated into the Interstate system.
