St. Michael Library Increasing Hours in 2013

More space, more use and more availability add up to a new lineup for 2013, which is great news to local families and readers alike.

The St. Michael-Albertville-Hanover Community Library, operated by Great River Regional Library’s system in 2010, will be seeing an expansion of hours in 2013.

That’s on the heels of two of the most successful years in the library’s history after the facility left its former home in the Colonial Mall and headed north to the new St. Michael Community Center.

The new hours schedule will take effect when the library opens on Wednesday, Jan. 2. The 2013 open hours schedule will be:

Monday – 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Tuesday – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesday – 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Thursday – 1 to 8 p.m.
Friday – Noon to 5 p.m.
Saturday – 10 am. to 1 p.m.

The library will remain closed on Sundays.

Within the reported a 50 percent increase in usage.

"My favorite part is seeing their faces light up when they walk in for the very first time," Marla Scherber, librarian at the St. Michael facility, said.

The new St. Michael-Albertville-Hanover library was  a project 10 years in the making. The community was quickly outgrowing the space in Colonial Mall, Scherber, the librarian for the past five years, said. There were needs for more computers, more space.

"A more modern look, too," she said.

As a result, the library has hosted more events than ever, from a recent performance of “The Nutcracker” by the Northland Ballet to a variety of readings and arts and craft activities for kids.

Kelly Tufto, a St. Michael resident and mom of two, told Patch in 2010 that visiting the new facilty is so much more welcoming than the old library.

"In the past, my daughter would grab her books, head to the counter to check out and get out of there. Now we can sit and read our books before we even leave," she said.

The entire library has tables and chairs throughout for reading or studying, there are conference rooms available for reservation to meet with a group, such as a book club

Children's Story time on Monday at 10 a.m.

While the hours are expanding, staffing levels are staying the same. So Scherber reminded Patch that she is always in need of volunteers. If you are interested, stop in the library and ask for her._
