Would-be Albertville Royalty Scurries After Storm

In one of Tuesday night's lighter moments, the candidates for this year's Miss Albertville crown were confined in a hotel bathroom when Tuesday's twister landed.

Tuesday night provided the second chance for the contestants for the Albertville Royalty spots to get together, following a bowling outing late last month.

It was Etiquette Night, which walks the young women through a variety of lessons, including the proper parade wave. Mrs. Minnesota 2006, Anglea Haseman, led the event at the Country Inn and Suites in Albertville.

But things took a turn as Tuesday night’s storm hit the area. As the warning sirens sounded and two funnels were spotted over nearby St. Michael, the girls huddled in a restroom together to wait out the storm.

“I guess it’s proof that girls just can’t go to the bathroom alone,” said Kelly Duncan, one of the Albertville Royalty organizers. “But, they were sure to grab the cookies, so we could snack while we waited.”

After the sirens stopped wailing, the girls stepped outside to see the damage. Hailstones were a novelty.

“They were huge,” Duncan said.

The nine candidates will put their training to use Saturday, as they have a sit-down interview with judges at Albertville City Hall. The candidates’ next public appearance is Saturday, May 21 when they host a 12-hour “Rock-A-Thon” fundraiser at Coborns. That event runs from noon to midnight.
