St. Michael Breaks Record High Today, Could See Snow Thursday

As a record high pressure system bring the area unprecedented weather, winter is looming around the corner, the National Weather Service said Tuesday.

You know the old saying, "If you don't like the weather in Minnesota ... just wait a while."?

What a difference the next 48 hours may make.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, St. Michael broke a record Tuesday afternoon as it "flirted with 50." The temperature hit 50 degrees in the Twin Cities area around 2 p.m., also breaking a record, according to WCCO TV.

But, hang on to those winter caps.

An infamous "clipper system" should be coming down from Canada sometime Tuesday night, bringing the possibility of accumulating snow on Wednesday, and a more seasonable high of 14 above for Thursday.

That's a 36-degree difference. Or a 180-degree turn back into winter, if you ask local residents.

"I'm enjoying it," said a motorist filling up her tank at the local "I can't think of a better winter."

Others weren't so kind. One man said he was hoping to use his snowmobile a little bit more, and his snowblower, for that matter.

"I didn't mind it last year," he said, referring to a winter that dropped snow by the foot in December.

He may get his wish, though. And soon.

According to the NWS: "Brisk northwest winds at 15 to 30 mph will develop on Wednesday with the strongest winds across the Minnesota River Valley. The threat for accumulating snow has increased over eastern Minnesota and much of Wisconsin for Wednesday night and Thursday as a low pressure system takes shape over the Great Lakes. As a result, those with travel interests should monitor later forecasts."
