Winter Storm Set to Sock St. Michael

Call it the "Leap Year Storm," or the latest "Snow-mageddon." Whatever it is, it's set to drop several inches of snow on St. Michael Tuesday and Wednesday.

While the St. Michael-Albertville area has been lucky this winter when it comes to winter storms and the dangers that come with them, it appears we won't dodge this latest bullet.

The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the area, including Wright County.

According to the NWS:

"A significant winter storm system will affect much of central and south central Minnesota and western Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening. Snowfall totals could exceed 8 inches over much of the outlook area while areas in central Minnesota and west central Wisconsin could exceed one foot of snow by Wednesday evening.

"The snow will cause hazardous or possibly life-threatening driving conditions by Tuesday evening. The precipitation could become mixed with rain or sleet over far south central Minnesota.

"See the National Weather Service website for the latest statements for updates and more detail on this impending winter storm."

That would bring the heaviest snowfall to the area since the Dec. 10-11, 2010 blizzard, which dumped 14 to 16 inches of snow on the St. Michael area.

There are several activities planned for Tuesday night, including the opening round of the Section 8-4A girls' basketball tournament here in St. Michael at The girls' team, the No. 2 seed in the section, hosts Bemidji.
