Frugal Family: Time to Get Down and Dirty, St. Michael Green Thumbs

Local businesses are gearing up for the garden season with some great buys. Here's a few you won't want to miss this weekend.

This week’s frugal finds are all about getting outside and getting a little bit dirty. After all the rain (and snow) we’ve had this last month, we should be seeing lots of May flowers, right?

  1. is having “Hat Day” on Saturday, April 30. Stop in wearing any hat and receive a free pansy.
  2. Are you needing to dethatch or aerate your yard but not wanting to spend the big bucks? Head over to where they rent all sorts of tools and equipment at reasonable prices. Added bonus, no need to find another space to store the tools you borrow.
  3. Fertilizer, soil, seedlings. Look no further than our local hardware stores. Both and offer great deals (and rebates) on many of the items you’re looking for this spring.
  4. Farm Fresh. If you’ve ventured near the outlet mall, you’ll see a new farm stand has gone up on the east side of the mall. Check out the assortment of flowers, hanging plants and other farm goodies they’ll be carrying this spring and summer.
  5. has a greenhouse that sets up shop in its parking lot annually. Though it's not ready to go just yet, there are specials inside the store on seeds for you garden and indoor plants for your "inner" green thumb.
