Patch Picks: Keep it Simple, Keep it Local this Valentine's Day

It's true, St. Michael-Albertville doesn't have the vast array of eating establishments of an Edina or even Plymouth. But here are a few great places not too far from home to have a good night out.

Sometimes romance doesn't have to be all about the dough.

The truth is, in this economy, you're not going to wisk your significant other away for a weekend in Napa Valley, or even a swanky five-star hotel for that matter.

Nope. With Valentine's Day on a Monday night, here's a way to keep it simple for the romantic in all of us.

1. D. Michael B's

This is a great place for a first date or a mom and dad get-away. DMB has great pasta, some savory steaks and can actually serve up some mouth-watering walleye.

Yes, it's one of those "Stuff on the Wall" restaurants, but it's local, and it's done right. There are only two in the state, so it's not like everything is mass produced. And with a convenient location off County Road 19 near the Outlets, it's not too far from home.

2. Dehn's Country Manor

It's old. It's kitsch. But it's the best steak you are ever going to have in the Twin Cities suburbs, and I will personally gaurantee it.

Dehn's is tucked away near Elm Creek Park Reserve on the Dayton/Maple Grove border. Catch Hennepin 81 in Rogers and head east and you won't miss it.

Unfortunately, it won't be prime rib night (unless Michael holds it over for a couple days), but check out Dehn's fliet mignon. Or, if the significant other likes steak, too, get the Chateau Briand. It's a steal for the price, and I know you'll leave with a doggy bag.

Steak and eggs Tuesday morning!

3. Russell's on the Lake

Big Lake is less than a 20-minute drive away, but has one of the best-kept secrets near the Twin Cities, and that's Russell's.

You've undoubtedly had Russell's at a catered event before, and Darek Vetsch does an outstaning job.

But get inside the restaurant with a great selection of food, a bit of a wine selection and an atmosphere that is second to none, and it's romantic night for two.

Russell's has a great menu, too. It's not Americana, but it's not strictly fine dining, either (there are chicken wings).

4.

The new Albertville hangout is back with a big special for Valentine's Day.

Joe won't telll us exactly what he has cooking, but Neighbors is a sneaky pick for a romantic evening. The new location is very well put-together and can transition from rockin' bar to casual dining with the flip of a couple of chairs.

This isn't going to be fine dining at it's best, but it's perfect for a night out. Plus, Neighbors won't break the bank with prices, either.

Joe even has some champagne in the fridge, if you're so inclined.

5.

Once again, the Albertville pizza has made our picks profile. But with a heart-shaped pizza special on Valentine's Day, how can you resist?

This is a deal that screams out: "I don't want to get a sitter, make a reservation, get cleaned up after work and go out."

Here's a tip: Stop by Coborns and pick up some flowers, light a candle and call in your order. If you set the stage, maybe she won't be disappointed you didn't go for the Chateau at Dehn's this year.
