Vikings Select HKS Inc. to be Archetect's on New Vikings Stadium

The Vikings are closer to getting their dream stadium! The Vikings have selected HKS Inc. to be the architects on the new sports facility.

Huge step forward in creating one of the best sports facilities in the world. HKS Inc. has been chosen to design the $975 million Vikings Stadium that is expected to be open to the public in 2016. HKS Inc. designed both the Colts and the Cowboys stadiums so it should be exciting to see what they pull out for us.

“Selecting an architect is one of the most important decisions we will make during this stadium process,” said Vikings Owner Mark Wilf. “Through extensive research and collaboration with the Stadium Authority, it became clear that HKS’ creativity and qualifications made them the best firm for this project. Having watched NFL games inside both of their most recent stadiums, we strongly believe HKS will deliver the ultimate game day experience for Vikings fans while also ensuring this facility serves all Minnesotans throughout the year.”

This is a really great day. At one point, we didn't even know if there would be a Vikings. Now we're in the stages of getting one of the best stadiums in the league (and this seasons play-offs).

HKS has pledged to work with a local architectural firm for a portion of the design and has committed to hiring 19% targeted businesses– 11% minority and 8% women-owned firms for portions of the contract, according to Vikings.com's release.

The contract is for design services and is in the amount of $34 million, which includes fees for subcontractors. The original price was $42 million before being negotiated down.

"A few years from now when we walk in there, it's going to be an absolutely incredible experience that's going to change people's lives in this state," said Mark Williams, a principal with the HKS Sports & Entertainment Group.

It's sure going to make peoples life better except maybe the opposing team's fans who go to games loathing the luxurious facility. Who's planning on going to the stadium during it's first season?

“We collectively selected HKS because they have exceptional qualifications and offered the most unique approach. They have designed world-class stadiums and they understand how to create successful multipurpose stadiums," said Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority Chairwoman Michelle Kelm-Helgen. "They have exceptional experience in roof design which really set them apart from the other firms. They consistently raise the design bar on every project they are involved in.”

Vikings Vice President Lester Bagley said the Vikings still hope to include a retractable roof, wall or window if such a feature can fit within the current budget - a decision that he said would have to be made early in the design process. He noted that the Indianapolis stadium has a retractable window, and the Dallas stadium has retractable walls on both ends. Both stadiums also have retractable roofs and suites and other features that can be reconfigured to keep up with the market.

Retractable roof? Uhhh yeah! There's very little doubt in my mind that they won't some how talk there way into getting it. It's a key part of getting our superior Vikings stadium.

Also I've been hearing rumors that there might be this interactive technology included that would allow fans to see replays, statistics and other game information on their smartphones. Anyone else know more info on this?
