Census 2010: St. Michael, Albertville Area Nearly Doubles in Population, Diversifies

The housing boom and strong economy of the early 2000s made St. Michael and Albertville grow at amazing rates, with the area nearly doubling in size since 2000.

It's no news to anyone that St. Michael and Albertville grew exponentially over the last decade. But official numbers from the 2010 United State Census show the area is becoming more diverse, and maintaining its youthfulness as well.

The official population of the St. Michael-Albertville area is now 23,443, up 84 percent from the 2000 Census, which had the two communities with a combined population of 12,720.

St. Michael grew at an eye-opening clip, adding more than 7,000 people over the last 10 years. That's a growth rate of about 77 percent.

The city has also diversified, with more than 300 people identifying themselves as black/African American, 395 as Asian  and 311 as Hispanic or Latino.

Those numbers were insignificant at best in 2000, when more than 97 percent of the community was designated as white.

Albertville, meanwhile, nearly doubled its population from 3,621 in 2000 to 7,044 according to the 2010 Census. The actual gain is about 94 percent.

That community has diversified as well. There were only 11 residents who identified as black/African American in 2000, and are 174 according to the new census. The Aisan population exploded from nine to 214, and Hispanic/Latino increased from two dozen to 197.

Meanwhile, Wright County grew by about 38 percent, from 89,986 to 124,700. Minnesota added about 390,000 people total, for a growth rate of about 8 percent.

The Minnesota State Legislature and the office of Gov. Mark Dayton will now use these figures as they redraw the state's political future. Redistricting must be completed before the first primaries are held in 2012, the next major election year. Census data will also be used for vital amenities, including city and county services, state management tools and other resources. In December, the Census Bureau released data from its , which St. Michael Patch profiled in early January. St. Michael Patch and fellow Minnesota Patches will have much more on the 2010 Census and what it means to the state, county and St. Michael-Albertville communities.
