Smithsonian Exhibit Comes to Wright County Historical Society

The traveling exhibit along with a local exhibit compare historical jobs with today's workers.

A traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Museum is displayed at the Wright County Historical Society through Dec. 7.

"The Way We Worked," compares jobs from throughout history to the same jobs in the present-day world.

"It shows jobs and industries in the U.S., and how they changed over the course of time," said the society's librarian, Olivia Thul.

There is also a companion exhibit put together by the society's curator that shows jobs held by Wright County residents from the past and present. A variety of jobs are displayed — including butchers, judges, teachers, soldiers and doctors.

In conjunction with the Smithsonian exhibit, the historical society will be hosting a multitude of presentations, programs and off-site tours every Tuesday. They are scheduled at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. each week at the Wright County Heritage Center, located at 2001 Highway 25 in Buffalo.

Off-site visits to local businesses are planned each Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

The next presentation's theme is "Farming: The Next Era," and features a remote-control tractor in "The Autonomous Tractor with Terry Anderson." It will take place Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The tractor, called SPIRIT, is capable of tilling, combining, hauling and mowing by remote control.

"Imagine achieving all this without actually sitting in a tractor cab but always being in control of the autonomous tractor and its tasks," states a historical society information release. "Speaker Terry Anderson promises a presentation highlighting a new way of thinking about farming, from inception to implementation of the SPIRIT, from the ground up."
