St. Michael City Center Opening Ceremonies Set for Saturday

After a blizzard wiped out the first ribbon cutting, staff from three cities and volunteers will officially christen the new hub.

It's been a long time coming.

Three and a half months and a few snow storms after its original planned unveiling, the St. Michael City Center will get its official welcome to the community Saturday morning.

Staff, volunteers and patrons are invited to the center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for a day of food, fun and frivolity. Featured events include a ribbon cutting ceremony shortly after 10 a.m., musical performances in council chambers room and give-aways at the Crow River Senior Center and St. Michael-Albertville-Hanover Library.

"A lot of people have been able to see the building over the last three months, but this could be a new opportunity to see the city center for some," said Amy Michenfelder of the Building It Together Committee, a group of volunteers responsible for raising thousands of dollars to help furnish the city center.

"They were really an integral group in putting this building together," said Marc Weigle, Community Development Director of St. Michael.

The building, which was in the works for nearly a decade and cost about $7 million to build, is home to the senior center, library and St. Michael City Hall. The St. Michael Historical Society also has space in the facility.

All events target the whole family. The musical performance will feature "Divas through the Decades," and starts at 11 a.m.

Arts and crafts in the craft room will feature origami, while the library will have Gonzo the Clown at 11 a.m. The seniors will host bingo in the new center, while Rockin' Rusty will perform after the divas.

Cookies and refreshments will also be provided by Marketplace and the seniors.
