St. Michael Community to Celebrate Veterans Day

Guest speakers, a presentation by the color guard and a performance by the St. Michael choir are scheduled.

An event to honor St. Michael veterans and show the community that veterans are still here to help is set for Sunday.

The program is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the St. Michael-Albertville Middle School West auditorium.

Organized by the St. Michael legion, the American Legion Post 567, the event is open to the public.

"It’s a way to honor and thank the veterans for what they’ve done and it’s a way for us to be out there to say we’re here for you for the community," said Eric Kloss, American Legion Post 567 commander. "That is what the basis of our organization is — that we’re here for our community."

The color guard will present the colors of the American flag, and the local boy scouts will kick off the event with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The main feature of the program is a speech by veteran and award-winning author Chris Sauro. He will speak about his experience as a marine in Vietnam and his book, "The Twins Platoon: An Epic Story of Young Marines at War in Vietnam."

The St. Michael Chamber Choir will sing at the event, and St. Michael-Albertville High School student Cody Goodchild will speak about Veterans Day.

His speech will be entered into a national legion competition that may qualify him for a scholarship.

Ed Rogalski of St. Michael, who sponsors the Wounded Warrior project, will speak about his experience last year rollerblading from Duluth to St. Michael last year to raise money for the project.

He is expected to explain his goal for this year in a similar project.

This was a very nice event! I'm shocked at how few people showed up to support & thank the veterans of our community. If this was a sporting event, I'm sure all the seats would have been filled.
