YEAR IN REVIEW: St. Michael Patch Top Story #4 The First Tornado of 2011
The first tornado in the state hit St. Michael last May.
As we look back on 2011 and as we recap some of the top stories on St. Michael Patch, severe weather definitely makes the list.
Severe weather is a part of St. Michael-Albertville summers but St. Michael can claim Minnesota's very first 2011 tornado last May.
The storm front that swept throught the Twin Cities between 7:30 and 9 p.m. May 10 dropped hail, heavy rain and even spawned a few funnel clouds. at 9540 42nd St. NE was the only one that looked like it was hit by a bomb.

The National Weather Service in Chanhassen confirmed that an F0 or F1 tornado did form and hit the western corner of St. Michael, causing destruction to a handful of homes near the intersection of Jana Avenue Northeast and 42nd Street Northeast.
Witnesses said a funnel cloud formed right above the neighborhood, and before anyone knew it, debris was flying.

While the tornado mostly damaged the families garage by ripping the roof off, the neighborhood damage was also visible. Trampolines and playsets were damaged and scattered throughout the neighborhood. Seven months later, the neighborhood has mostly returned to normal and few repairs are remaining.
