St. Michael Family Featured on Cover of Parade of Homes Guide

The fall Parade of Homes magazine cover went to a "real family" from St. Michael's Highlands development.

Take a glance at the cover of this fall's guide to the Parade of Homes across the Twin Cities and you might be looking at a neighbor.

Tammy and Kevin Karger, who live in the Highlands of St. Michael, are this season's featured family. The Kargers are highlighted for their "three-home" relationship with Christian Builders of Rogers.

"It's not something we really expected. Christian Builders asked if they could submit us as their story, and we agreed. We've had such a positive experience with them for all three homes we've built," Tammy said.

The family moved to Rogers a little over a decade ago and went with Christian after doing some research. When the Highlands was planned, the family was one of the first to move out to St. Michael. And, after listing their home–due to some growth in the family–they were able to sell their second home right away.

"It went faster than we expected, especially since the market is tough and there's so much inventory," Tammy said. "We looked around a while, and we ended up going with Christian again."

And, they wound up staying in the Highlands, finding a lot in a cul-de-sac backed up to some wetlands on the west end.

"We rented a home for about six months, from the end of 2010 to earlier this year, and we knew what we wanted by the end of that," Tammy added. "When we found the lot, this time we looked to Christian right away."

The home isn't on the Parade, but the Karger family is featured in the guide with other "real people" telling their stories about building, buying and remodeling.

"We love it here in St. Michael. It's such a great community," Tammy said. "With the schools, and our oldest in third grade, we've just been able to work with some great people. It's so great that we're able to stay in this area. We're very lucky."
