10 Reasons Why This Summer's Weather is Perfect for Portraits!

I don't know about you, but this rainy, cloudy sun-less weather is really starting to get to me. Actually, it started getting to me about a month ago. Now I'm just so over it. Like everyone else, I'm craving some heat and sunshine. As a photographer, though, I will quietly admit it… I kind of like it… a lot. Below are 10 reasons why this weather is great for portraits, and why you should take advantage of it if you are thinking about having portraits of any kind taken this year. 10. One of the best reasons to like this kind of weather for portraits is that the cloudy sky acts like a big giant light diffuser, which gives portraits a very nice, even light. 9. Many photographers skip the times of day when the sun is the highest creating the harshest light and the most shadows. We certainly do when we can. Cloudy skies like we've been experiencing mean we have even light all day long, which means we can choose times that are more convenient for our clients because it doesn't matter what time of day we shoot like it does when we have summer sun. 8. With all of this rain, the grass is really lush and green. We typically have nice green colors in early summer, but by mid July things are turning brown and some grasses, etc., are scorched and we have to avoid them. The lush greens we have now make the PERFECT backdrop for most types of portraits. 7. No sweating (hopefully). When summer is at it's peak and we are shooting portraits it's often in the heat which makes people sweat, which isn't so good. The cooler, shadier weather means that our clients are often more comfortable and therefore at ease. 6. When photographing anything under cloudy skies, pictures tend to be more saturated and the color really pops. 5. Now that the temps have warmed up (at least a bit), combined with the rain, the flowers and vegetation look great. Colorful flowers make great backdrops for portraits, especially when they are full of color and in good health. 4. Beat the rush. So many families remember that they want family portraits or portraits of their children around October 15th, and by then the calendars are pretty full, so scheduling early is a great way to beat the fall rush. 3. Summers get busy quickly, and once they do, it's hard to schedule everyone in a family to be in the same place at the same time. Before you know it fall is here, and then we're back at #4. 2. There's no time like the present, especially when there are little ones in your family. They change so quickly, even from the beginning to the end of summer. 1. I think all of the reasons I listed above are great reasons to take advantage of the cloudy, sun-less weather we've been having when it comes to portraits, but we need a number ten, so how about a discount for our loyal patch readers? Mention "SUNLESS MINNESOTA" when booking a session of any kind before the end of June (must be photographed in 2013), and receive a 15% discount.
