Fun Halloween Craft - Giant Spider

A fun, easy Halloween craft to do with your kids!

For this week's blog, I am going to take a departure from talking about wedding related issues and focus on Halloween decorations.  Halloween is my favorite holiday because it is the one day a year you get to be whoever or whatever you want! Plus there is plenty of chocolate.

Great design sets the atmosphere for any event so coming up with fun decor for your Halloween party is essential. I decided to use spiders as my inspiration for spooky decorations this year. I found the spider web at the dollar store and thought it would be perfect to decorate our doorway for Trick or Treaters.

I generously spread the spider web all over and added the little black spiders that came with it. However, it just wasn't spooky enough so I decided to create big, giant mama spiders and hanging spider eggs. This was a surprisingly simple craft project but it looks "spooktacular!"

To create the giant mama spiders, I used: black garbage bags, quilt batting, rubber bands, black chenille stems, and a glue gun. First, I cut giant circles out of the black garbage bag then I placed a generous amount of batting in the center of the circle. Gather up all the ends and fasten with a black rubber band and cut off any excess. Do the same with a smaller portion for the head.

Next, cut four chenille stems in half to make eight spider legs. Simply stick them into the body of the spider and bend them into the position that looks best to you. Finally, use your hot glue gun to attach the head to the body. Hold the head firmly on the body for 90 seconds before releasing it. Position the giant spiders on your web by using the chenille stems to keep them in place.

For the giant spider egg you will need one white, six-inch, Styrofoam ball, some spider web and twenty five small black plastic spiders. Generously wrap the Styrofoam ball in several layers of spider web. Use your glue gun to secure the first web layer onto the ball then continue wrapping it until the Styrofoam no longer shows through. Pull one side of the spider web into a long, thick strand so it will hang down. Next, use your glue gun to attach the black spiders onto the spider egg. I like to concentrate them in one area and then scatter them so it looks like the spider egg just hatched. Ewwww!

Happy Halloween everyone!
