Former Owner of the Great St. Michael Cafe, Norman Barthel, Dies

Norman owned a pair of eateries after a long career in Minneapolis. He had retired to Garrison, MN before being moved to Buffalo.

Norman Barthel, formerly of Garrison, also formerly of Albertville, died Thursday, Dec. 5 at Park View Care Center in Buffalo.

Barthel, who grew up in the St. Michael-Albertville area, operated a couple of small businesses here, including the Rockford Bakery and the St. Michael Cafe. He had a long career at Honeywell prior to going into small business.

The cafe was torn down, of course, as St. Michael renovated the downtown business district in the early 2000s. It was located where Eye West Eyecare now sits.

Services for Norman are set for noon Saturday, December 14th at the Church of St. Albert in Albertville, where Norman was a member for many years. Father Peter Richards will be the Celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Albert Cemetery.

Visitations will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 12th at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Garrison and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, December 14th at The Church of St. Albert.
