A St. Michael man is facing second-degree murder charges after he allegedly punched and killed a man outside of a small-town bar in northeastern Minnesota.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, Paul Welle, 33, has been charged with second-degree murder after he allegedly assaulted a 60-year-old Blaine man.

Dale Anderson died after he was hit in the face in front of the Powerhouse Bar, 423 N. Third Ave. in Proctor, according to police records. Witnesses said a woman, who was being pressured by Welle to leave with him, asked Anderson to pose as her father because she did not want to go.

Welle is married and a father of two, according to witnesses and a Facebook page under his name.

Researching his criminal history, Welle has multiple arrests for assault, check forgery and moving violations. He has served jail time for an assault in the past. In all, 38 cases have been filed against him in seven Minnesota counties

The story is a familar one for St. Michael residents. The community was torn as a local man, Alex Tuomisto, faced similar charges for assaulting and critically injuring a man outside of the Corner Bar in 2010. That man later died.

Tuomisto, a St. Michael-Albertville High School graduate, is currently serving jail time after pleading guilty to first-degree felony assault.

Welle was charged in St. Louis County Court on Monday. Judge Sally Tarnowski has set bail at $400,000.

His attorney, David Malban of Duluth, said the two men were involved in an altercation, and it was a "one-punch fight," according to the Tribune report.
