Mixed Race Couple Subject to Harassment from Otsego Neighbor

A mixed-race couple that recently moved to Otsego has filed no less than seven reports with the Wright County Sheriff's Department, alleging that they've been threatened and harassed by a neighbor.

Residents of an Otsego townhome on Lachman Avenue say they've endured weeks of harassment, presumably from a neighbor who can't accept the fact that they're a mixed-race couple.

The two told their story to Twin Cities NBC affiliate KARE 11 last night, saying the neighbor has verbally threatended them and that their dog was stabbed with a knife.

Demetrius Baker Jr. and his fiancee, Michelle Cardinal, told KARE's Jana Shortall that Baker Jr. was confronted by the neighbor, a white man, and called "a nigger."

They have since installed cameras and a home security system. That didn't stop a burglary, or damage to property recently that included slashed tires.

Wright County is investigating all the reports, and did not want to comment on the ongoing investigation. The couple told KARE 11 they will not move out of their home.

This is so sad!! Come on people.... this is a new day and age! I say live and let live! Who are we to judge others in this manner and then to be violent to boot! Unbelievable!

This is no longer about ignorance, these are deliberate violent acts; hate crimes. Where is the prosecution? This kind of behavior will not be tolerated in our community. I look forward to The Patch following up on this.

I agree, these are hate crimes. I hope the Wright County Sheriffs really stay on top of this. It makes me sad to think that people still have this attitude and that I have to teach my bi-racial children that some people may not like them because the color of their skin.

Two sides to every story. Note that there is an ongoing investigation. Can't always believe what you hear... there is more to this story.

THERE ARE ALWAYS TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY YOU HEARD WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY BUT THEY DIDNT ASK ANY ONE WHO LIVES AROUND THEM WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY ABOUT ALL OF THIS!!!!

Until more details are disclosed - it would be imprudent for anyone to comment on what happened here. Clearly, those that claim they've been harassed have stated their case through the media - be very very careful in assigning blame to anyone when someone takes their case directly to the media - history of this sort of action has often been proven to be inaccurate or completely false. Secondly, while crimes are certainly committed based on ethnicity, gender etc....the term "hate crimes" is nothing more than an attempt by some (the left) to control one's thoughts and consequently assign special blame to them. Governments' role is to protect persons and their property from harm from others - not to control thought or speech. The 1st Amendment takes precedence here - and any "hate crime" legislation is unconstitutional. A crime committed should be evaluated and treated equally.

It's pretty sad when someone can place the blame on another person or persons. All this couple has to do is "say" that it has to do with racism. That's not the case at all! Maybe CHANNEL 11 news needs to investigate a story before airing it..... Wright county is looking into this case as they are deliberately wrecking there own belongings to make the neighbor look bad "framing evidence" is a crime and you two will be found guilty of doing so and charges will be brought on you.

Reguardless of both sides srory. Jesus taught us to love our neighbors. Do unto othets as you would have rhem do to you. We should all follow his ways, It would be a better world. We are all the same inside.

I ment to say we are all the same color on the inside.

If this couple has had their dog stabbed/their property rights violated then clearly these are wrongs. If they've been called names and consistently harassed - those are not crimes - but horrible behavior by really ignorant, stupid people. Once you decide that government can choose what speech is bad (however terrible that speech/thought might be) - you have allowed the government to become the arbiter of any speech. That is why defining "hate crimes" is also wrong and unconstitutional.

I completely agree; however the couple has NO evidence and is falsely accusing a neighbor. The whole story will come out sooner than later. Hopefully the couple will read your quote. Karma will take care of the guilty party and this sad situation will come to an end.

So have you read the updated article??? What do you think now? It’s sad how some people jump to conclusions without knowing the facts. He staged the whole thing! How do you think the innocent neighbor must feel that was being falsely accused? The whole story was fishy from the beginning. Quite a few people with their tail between their legs?
