89% Voter Turn Out in Albertville

Albertville City Hall saw record numbers come through and vote Tuesday.

Albertville City Hall was busy Tuesday with over 3000 voters making their way through the building to vote. They had over 700 new voter registrations that day.

"All in all, we had 89% voter turnout," city clerk Kim Olson told the council on Wednesday night.

Going into the election, the city already had 3849 registered voters, 267 of which voted absentee. An additional 743 new voters registered Election Day and the total amount of voters was 3447.

Jillian Hendrickson was elected mayor and will take her oath and begin her new position at the first council meeting in January. At that point in time, the council will declare a vacancy on the council as she still has two years left on her council term. The council will then work together and appoint a new council member.

There were two elected city council positions open this election and John Vetsch will be returning to one of them as he received the most votes for council. The other seat will be decided through a recount as Mark Barthel and Larry Sorenson were only one vote apart.

"It's not an automatic recount, a written request has to be submitted after the city canvasses the results," City Attorney Mike Couri explained Wednesday further stating that either candidate in question has a right to have a recount at city expense.

City Finance Director Tina Lannes expects the cost to be low, estimating that it will likely be under $500.

"Assuming a challenge is made, a recount will be happening in the near future," Couri said.

Sorenson confirmed that he does plan on challenging and asking for a recount after Tuesday night's canvass meeting. City staff hopes the recount can take place by the end of next week.
