Albertville Eyes Winter Park for Dogs

The city would add an off-leash, fenced-in area at the local park if the council approves it next month.

Dog owners in St. Michael-Albertville will be happy to find out that the City of Albertville is hoping to fence in an area of Winter Park to make a dog park for local canines.

When the park was built and established the original plan had been to include a dog park, but the expense was spared until interest was shown. With more recent requests from residents, the Albertville Parks Committee recently voted and requested it.

“The park would hopefully be open by next year,” said City Public Works Employee Tim Guimont

City staff's request is to install a 12,400 sq. ft. fence in the northeast corner of Winter Park to create the hound haven. The park is accessible via 64th Street, south of Wright County Road 37.

The approximate cost would be no more than $5,353.

The City of Albertville does have one other dog park, located in the area (north of the Albertville Premium Outlets.

The city budgets $10,000 a year for park updates.

Council member Jillian Schommer was absent at last week’s council meeting, so the Albertville council has postponed the decision until the May 2 meeting.

“We are interested in resident input,” Guimont said. Staff has asked that anyone with feedback or ideas to contact him at 763-497-3145.
