Bachmann Beat: The 'Dereliction of Duty' of Congress

A daily roundup of news and commentary about U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

At the CNBC debate Wednesday night sixth-district congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann portrayed President Obama as kowtowing to the advice of his political adviser David Axelrod instead of listening to job creators.

Here’s the quote:

“Well, I would say President Obama is the one that’s wrong, because President Obama’s plan for job creation has absolutely nothing to do with the true people who know how to create jobs. He should really be going to job creators if he wants to know how to create jobs. Instead, he continues to go to a General Axelrod in Chicago to look for his orders to figure out how to deal with the economy.”

In a post-debate interview, Bachmann was sympathetic toward Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s inability to recall all three federal agencies he said he planned to cut.

“I think all of us felt very bad for him—honestly, no one wants to draw a blank thought and sometimes that can happen,” she said. “It’s your worst nightmare—so I think everyone felt really bad for him tonight.”

In a campaign move meant to project military strength, Bachmann is planning on delivering a foreign policy speech today in a hangar bay of the retired aircraft carrier Yorktown, which is stationed in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

In an interview with Greta Van Susteren of Fox News, Bachmann spoke out against bloated bills such as Dodd-Frank and “Obamacare.”

“These are bills that never finish being written because they are written by nameless, faceless bureaucrats who write it for themselves,” she said. “This is absolutely sick, Greta. It comes at a very high cost and it's a dereliction of duty on the part of Congress, which is why I oppose it.”

In Minnesota, St. Paul Park mayor John Hunziker had only one (unqualified) statement to make after he lost his bid for re-election.

“I only have one statement to make, and that is with the results of the mayoral election in St. Paul Park it only goes to prove that Michele Bachmann can be elected president of the United States.”
