Bachmann Proposes Renaming Cold Spring Post Office in Honor of Slain Officer

She took to the House floor Tuesday and said Tom Decker's example of courage and compassion lives on.

 

Minnesota's Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R) introduced legislation this week that aims to rename the Cold Spring Post Office after recently slain police officer Tom Decker.

Under the proposal, the building would be renamed "Officer Tommy Decker Memorial Post Office," Bachmann said when she took to the house floor Tuesday.

According to Minnesota Public Radio, the legislation was co-authored by every other member of Minnesota's U.S. House delegation.

Decker was shot in the line of duty outside a Cold Spring bar Nov. 29 as he conducted a welfare check.

Minnesota Public Radio reported that Bachmann said, "In honor of Officer Decker's service, I am proud to join with all of my Minnesota colleagues to introduce legislation to rename his hometown post office the 'Officer Tommy Decker Memorial Post Office.

"Though he is no longer with us, Officer Decker's example of unparalleled courage and compassion lives on."

The St. Cloud Times reported that Bachmann added, "He touched so many lives in his distinguished career."

Decker's death is still under investigation. The initial suspect arrested that night was released after investigators found his connection was "not even close" to the murder of the officer.

Thousands of officers from around the nation attended Decker's funeral, including the Wright County Sheriff's Office deputies and its color guard in early December.
