MinnPost: How Rep. David FitzSimmons' Same-Sex Marriage Support Is Playing Back Home

The freshman Republican legislator from Albertville voted in support of the 'marriage equality' bill—and amended it to cover 'civil marriage.'

State Rep. David FitzSimmons (R-Albertville) "is now paying the price" for successfully amending and then voting for the bill that made marriage between two Minnesotans of the same sex legal, according to MinnPost. And Cyndy Brucato writes that future support from a pro-gay-marriage group may only take him so far. An excerpt: 

“I think like most things dealing with the electorate, it’s a wide variety of viewpoints,” [FitzSimmons] said. “Everything from people who are upset with the results, upset with me — and people who are sympathetic to the situation and knew I was trying to get something out of the legislation.” ...

Amy Koch, former state senator from Wright County, says Minnesotans United may be helpful but needs to recognize the composition of the district. “He [FitzSimmons] has the very conservative side of the district — St. Michael, Albertville,” she said. "[In redistricting] he picked up Big Lake."
