HISTORICAL DATA

After redistricting in 2012 placed St. Michael, Albertville and Otsego in completely new legislative and county districts, much of history can be thrown out the window.

St. Michael, Albertville and Otsego were grouped, through the early 2000s, with each other at the county level up until this year. Now, eastern St. Michael has been broken off with Otsego, while western St. Michael, Albertville and the Hanover/Rockford area comprise another distrct.

After years of representation from St. Michael resident and longtime teacher Elmer Eichelberg, the STMA area could have no representation (in terms of members from the community), or complete representation in the county commission chambers.

Albertville's Michael Potter and St. Michael's Mark Daleiden are running. But both face stiff tests in separate precincts. If both lose, it'd be the first time in recent history the STMA community hasn't had representation. Daleiden's opponent, Tom Darkenwald, is from Otsego. Mary Wetter is battling Potter in the other new district.

At the state level, this is a new district as well, with STMA, Otsego, portions of Elk River and Big Lake comprising the new District 30.

In the south, District 30B is strongly Republican, with pundits showing it favoring GOP candidates by more than 30 points.

In the north, a bit more bipartisan, but still a predominently GOP district.

Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer is aiming for the Senate seat, while longtime GOP organizer and Congressional District 6 chair David FitzSimmons of Albertville is in line for the House 30B seat.

They square off against DFLers new to this race. Sharon Shimek battles FitzSimmons in 30B, while Paul Perovich is squaring off with Kiffmeyer.

Two Cities, Four Races

The communities of Albertville and St. Michael, of course, each have their own race. The St. Michael-Albertville School District will see a majority of its board up for election as well. And the Albertville mayoral race assures that community of a new mayor for the second time in two years.

St. Michael Mayor Jerry Zachman is running unopposed.

In St. Michael, Chris Schumm and Joe Marx were both appointed to the council, both after having lost in general elections.

In Albertville, Johnny Vetsch and Larry Sorensen are the incumbents, both wrapping up four-year terms. They're challenged by several newcomers.

Meanwhile, the mayoral race features council member Jillian Hendrickson, who would retain her seat should she lose, vs. former mayor Don Peterson.
