St. Michael Council to Consider Appointment for Open Seat Tonight

Longtime city servant Cindy Weston will make it official tonight, stepping down from the St. Michael City Council this evening. The search is on for her replacement, to be appointed to the council.

It will be a bittersweet night for the St. Michael City Council this evening as the panel is expected to accept the resignation of longtime public servant Cindy Weston at tonight's regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at

Weston, who has served the community in some capacity since 2000, is moving to Arizona.

"It's a little sad to leave this all behind," Weston said. "But I'll be back."

Weston helped found St. Michael Daze and Knights, the city's annual celebration in August, back in 2006-2007.

The council can appoint an interested resident to the open position after a short interview process. It has reached to members of current public committees, including planning and zoning and the economic development committee.

Former candidates, including 2010's "odd-man" out, Chris Schumm, have also been polled for their interest. Schumm has been attending recent meetings and has expressed interest in the open seat.

The position would be for just one year. Weston's term was scheduled to be up in 2012. Anyone who fills the seat would have to campaign for re-election next year.

"With Cindy stepping down and [former council member] Joe Hagerty now sheriff, we've lost a lot of experience on our council. That can be a good and bad thing," said City Administrator Bob Derus. "We'll move forward, but we'll definitely miss Cindy."
