The annual fundraiser for the St. Michael Catholic School might be the reminder we need that summer is just around the corner.

Grab your flip-flops. Find the beach towels. Heck, if you're really in the mood, toss on some suntan lotion.

Bids for Kids is back, and it's headed to the beach.

The ninth annual fundraiser foris set for 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday. The night features dinner, live and silent auctions, social hours and live music. This year's event will be hosted by the Northland Inn in Brooklyn Park.

St. Micahel Catholic School "mom" Justine Folkestad, who works as a daycare provider, told the St. Michael Catholic Church newsletter she attended her first even before her kids were even at the Catholic school. Now, she's hoping the fundraiser will help support the new middle school endeavor announced last month, allowing her kids to stay in the sytem.

"We've been fortunate to meet so many other great families," through Bids, Justine said.

The "Bids Beach Blast" has received great support from the local business community and other donors, those involved with the event said. Donations for the silent aution include everythign from dinner parties to vacations, lawn services to babysitting.

Some of the high-roller items include a year's free tuition at St. Michael Catholic School (which will save one lucky family some major bucks), a weekend stay at Stony Lack in Hackensack, and an ice fishing weekend hosted by a school parent.

Money from the Bids For Kids event benefits the school in many different ways, said principal Jennifer Haller. Some dollars are set aside to aid the school's operating budget, but most of the money is used to make improvements within the school, from technology updates to the school's Spanish program.

"It's a fun night," Haller said, "and it's for a great cause. It's really fun to see everyone involved with the school in a party setting like that."
