PHOTOS: St. Michael-Albertville Girls Spend One Moment on Center Stage

From a motivational huddle in the depths of Target Center, to a teary-embrace at the final horn, the Knights battled for their spot in the State Tournament spotlight.

Lost, perhaps, in trip to the Girls' Basketball State 4A Tournament yesterday was the fact that this was an unlikely team to be making a trip to the big time.

Sure, the Knights had Christine Thorn, a Division II recruit , one of just a handful in school history to top that mark. But St. Michael-Albertville lost three of its starting five players from a year ago, including two all-conference selections and its second-leading scorer.

"I think, really, this team has raised the bar just another level for St. Michael-Albertville basketball," said head coach Kent Hamre. "The juniors we have coming back will have this experience to look back on next season."

While the Knights started slow, they fought to the finish, cutting the lead under 10 points twice.
