St. Michael-Albertville Teachers Recognized by TIES

Two St. Michael-Albertville teachers were recognized as a TIES 2011 Exceptional Teacher earlier this month.

Two St. Michael-Albertville teachers were recognized earlier this month when they were named TIES Exceptional Teachers by superintendent James Behle. St. Michael-Albertville High School Teacher Jox Metcalf and Middle School West Teacher Ryan Canton were recognized amidst 83 other teachers from 43 other districts.

TIES Exceptional Teacher award was established to recognize teachers in TIES member districts who model the best practices in their classroom and engaging students in learning.

Since 2005, Jox Metcalf and his students have been producing a daily “live” broadcast at St. Michael-Albertville High School in his Broadcast Journalism class.  Prior to this position, Jox served on the district technology committee and assisted other teachers in his building. In this role, he provided training for staff during workshop days or staff meetings on integrating technology into the curriculum.

Jox assisted in the planning, implementation and setup of the new broadcast studio that was part of the new high school that opened in the fall of 2009. His leadership and determination led to the successful broadcast of over 1100 “live” shows. This program has become more successful over time and has become a great tool for communication within the high school.  “This is a great learning experience for the students in the high school and Jox has worked through the challenges of being in this arena and has done an excellent job with this program. The daily exposure to one’s work raises the level of concern and accountability on the part of the students and teachers. Jox’s creative nature and the hard work of the students consistently produce high-quality broadcasts,” stated Principal, Robert Driver.

As a social studies teacher at St. Michael-Albertville Middle School West, Ryan Canton provides leadership in the building and is a strong advocate for technology integration within his classroom and throughout the building. He has been an integral part of the St. Michael-Albertville Middle School West staff for the past several years and embraces technology.  In addition to the responsibilities related to the classroom, he is always willing to help others in their efforts to implement technology into the curriculum.  He provides training for staff during teacher workshop days or staff meetings on using new classroom technology including Skype, SMART boards, “clickers” and Google Sites.  Principal Andrew Merfeld describes Ryan as being “an asset to our staff whose excitement and personality has allowed him to assume a leadership role in the area of technology integration and the students in his classes are engaged, active learners.”

Ryan is always willing to be a technology resource and leader for the staff in his building.  His teaching is a great example of how the tools of technology can have a positive impact on student learning at the middle level.
