St. Michael's Canton Nominated for State Teacher of the Year

St. Michael-Albertville Middle School teacher Ryan Canton is one of about 115 teachers in the running for the state award. Finalists were announced Thursday.

The 2012 Minnesota Teacher of the Year will be chosen from a field of 111 candidates. These candidates have accepted their nominations and completed the required materials to become eligible for the honor.

Included in this year’s field is teacher Ryan Canton, who teachers social studies at the school and is also an assistant soccer coach.

This year’s program will name the 48th Minnesota Teacher of the Year, celebrating the tradition of excellence in teaching in Minnesota. Candidates include pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers, from public or private schools.

The 2012 Minnesota Teacher of the Year will be announced Sunday, May 6, at The Northland Inn in Brooklyn Park, MN. Over the coming weeks, a 22-member panel of community leaders will name a group of semifinalists, and then finalists.

Education Minnesota organizes and underwrites the Minnesota Teacher of the Year Program, which receives program and award support from the following organizations: The SMARTer Kids Foundation, The Northland Inn, the Harvard Club of Minnesota Foundation, United Educators Credit Union, McDonald’s Restaurants of Minnesota, Teacher Federal Credit Union, Pearson Education and Education Minnesota ESI.

Canton was recenlty chosen for an all-expenses paid, two-week trip to Germany last summer through a public-private partnership called the Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP). He made the trip last year.

Totally agree with Mrs. Haller. He goes above and beyond with the students. Most of my children have had him in and they all love him! He includes the parents with his creative videos for us to view and it is very enjoyable education for us as well. Thanks for great teaching skills for the students and for us parents as well. This man loves his job!
