STMA High School's Steve Scherber Named Central Minnesota Assistant Principal of the Year

The high school's longtime assistant principal earns high honor from MASSP.

For 13 years St. Michael-Albertville High School’s assistant principal, Steve Scherber, has put all of his focus on building relationships with local students and helping them succeed. His colleagues at the high school have long known him to be a big asset to their school, and now he’s getting recognition from beyond the district by being named the Central Minnesota Assistant Principal of the Year by the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP).

Scherber taught high school physical education and health for nine years in St. Paul before accepting a position in St. Michael-Albertville as a guidance counselor in 1998. Though it was a big move from a urban school to the very rural area that STMA was 13 years ago, Scherber said it felt a bit like coming home since the area had a very similar feel to the farm in Corcoran where he was raised. Four years ago Scherber moved into administration as one of the high school’s two assistant principals.

“It just evolved into a different way to make a difference and to have an impact on kids in the entire school,” Scherber said of his decision to become an administrator, “but I enjoyed every role. I just love working with kids and families.”

Scherber works 10 to 12-hour days, something he said most of his co-workers also do, but he said it’s enjoyable work because he’s so passionate about his job. He also got the benefit of sharing the building with his two children during their high school years, with his youngest graduating next month. While some students would not count this as a benefit to have your dad as the high school principal, he said it worked out well since his kids didn’t land themselves on the receiving end of any disciplinary action.

All of his effort and dedication to the school did not go unnoticed, and in March when the email came through about the award nominations, principal Dale Carlson and co-assistant principal Bob Driver both had the same guy in mind, and they got together to nominate Scherber.

“His number one asset is that he is focused on students all the time, in every decision that he makes,” Driver said. “He is just dedicated both to the district and the school, and he just wants to do what’s best for the kids here.”

Scherber found out that he received the award two weeks ago, and he attended a banquet at the Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker, which was hosted by the MASSP to honor the winners. He will now go through additional steps while the organization chooses a Minnesota Assistant Principal of the Year from the seven different Minnesota districts. That process will occur throughout the next school year.

“It’s exciting to be recognized for hard work but, again, for doing something you really enjoy,” he said. “We have a great staff and a great student body, so coming to work everyday is just a blast.”
