Finally, St. Michael-Albertville's Spaeth Returns to Steelers

The Gopher tight end and Knights' standout battled back from injury and is finishing out this NFL season.

It was a season that was supposed to be a homecoming, of sorts, for Matt Spaeth.

The St. Michael-Albertville and University of Minnesota standout had already won a Super Bowl ring with the Steelers earlier in his career. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin brought him back to the fold this past offseason, after the Chicago Bears cut Spaeth loose in favor of a pass-catching tight end named Martellus Bennett.

Even though Spaeth had a highlight reel catch against his former hometown team for the Bears last season.

But Spaeth's return to Pittsburgh was derailed by an unfortunate foot injury. Dubbed a "Lisfranc" injury for the doctor who discovered it, it shelved the big, blocking tight end for 12 weeks when the Steelers put him on the injured reserve list (with designation to return).

Spaeth returned to the practice field in November, but didn't see game action until Sunday, Dec. 8, when the Steelers hosted Miami in a "snow bowl." A local blog captured one of No. 87's first drives for the Steelers here, where he made key blocks on plays that led the offense to the end zone.

Spaeth and the Steelers have two games left and are still alive in the playoff hunt (albeit barely).
