Knights Inch Closer to Postseason

St. Michael-Albertville teams continue to jostle for preferred sectional seeding.

The spring sports campaign pushed closer to its conclusion as teams from  St. Michael-Albertville continued to jostle for preferred sectional seeding.

Baseball: Knights Improve To 8-6

An 8-6 defeat of Mississippi 8 Conference rival Rogers on Tuesday improved the St. Michael-Albertville baseball team to 8-6 overall and 8-4 in circuit play.

Shawn Morris drove in four runs, with Andrew McCarthy recording three runs batted in on the day, with Dair Krutzig, Garrett Watters and Ben Scmitz all scoring twice each.

Watters earned the victory after giving up two earned runs in four innings of work before giving way to Justin Dzubay, who claimed a save after hurling the final three frames.

STMA had closed out last week with a 7-1 non-conference loss against visiting St. Thomas Academy, with Morris scoring the home side's lone tally.

The Knights travel to Big Lake for a 4:30 p.m. matchup on Thursday.

Softball: STMA Third In Fridley Tournament

The St. Michael-Albertville softball team finished third in the Fridley Tournament after going 2-1 against non-conference opponents in the Saturday competition.

The Knights topped Minneapolis Patrick Henry, 26-0, in the tourney opener and defeated Red Wing, 1-0, in the semifinals before losing to Coon Rapids, 7-0, in the finale.

Returning to Mississippi 8 play on Tuesday, STMA shutout Rogers by a 9-0 score to improve to 10-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

Kelsey Blank leads the Knights with a .367 batting average and 13 RBI, while Bailey Thompson's 11 runs scored pace the club; pitcher Torey Malerich currently has a 7-6 record with  59 strikeouts and a 2.40 earned run average.

STMA travels to Big Lake for a 4:30 p.m. game on Thursday.

Boys Golf: Knights Win Princeton Invitational

A score of 314 earned the St. Michael-Albertville boys golf team the championship of the Princeton Invitational at the Princeton Golf Course on Monday. Individual results were not available.

Boys Tennis: Knights Split Monday, Tuesday Matches

The St. Michael-Albertville boys tennis team will carry a 6-11 record into a Thursday match versus Osseo after splitting its early-week competitions.

The Knights topped Princeton by a 6-1 score on Monday and lost 4-2 to Buffalo on Tuesday. Individual results were not available.

Girls Golf: Knights Remain In Fourth In Mississippi 8 Standings

The St. Michael-Albertville girls golf team remained in fourth place in the Mississippi 8 standings after carding a season-low 386 at Wild Marsh in Buffalo last Thursday.

Kylie Slavin led the Knights with a 91, with Sam Wortman scoring a 93.

On Monday, STMA won the Annandale Two-Person Scramble at Whispering Pines after winning a tiebreaker versus Monticello after both teams finished regulation play tied at 161. 

The team of Wortman and Krista Bramhall fired a team-best 79, with Kate Drimel and Slavin posting an 82.
