Tackle Cancer: KARE 11's Randy Shaver Features St. Michael Senior Sean Scharlau

St. Michael-Albertville High School is one of more than 100 Minnesota schools helping raise money for the Twin Cities television personality. For the Knights, this one is personal.

For St. Michael-Albertville lineman Sean Scharlau, strength is the name of the game.

The standout, who plays both offense and defense for Jared Essler and the Knights, is as impressive in the weight room as he is on a football field, where's destined to be all conference this season after a solid start.

Scharlau owns two records in the STMA powerlifting program. That's competing with teammates like Bennie Wilson and Mike Kessler, both formidable lifters in their own right.

But it's inner strength that has defined Scharlau this year. The senior has been playing for his late father, Tony, who died last summer at the age of 48 from cancer.

KARE 11 featured Sean and the STMA football program Wednesday as the Knights prepare to lace up for homecoming Friday night vs. Buffalo.

The game will serve as the biggest fundraiser of the season for STMA as it looks to donate to Randy Shaver's Cancer Research Fund. Shaver established the charity, which helps fund local cancer research, after he battled the disease.

The Knights and Bison square off at 7 p.m. Friday night at St. Michael-Albertville Middle School. The game will be webcast here on Patch, with video via iHigh and the STMA managers, and audio available through KRWC's website. KRWC will also have the game live on its station.
